Travel Tips
1
To get from the Tampa cruise port to most attractions in the city, you’ll need to rent a car or use a ridesharing service. There are a handful of car rental agencies located close to the port. You can also take the TECO Line Streetcar around downtown Tampa and Y-Bor. There’s a stop nearby where cruises from Tampa depart. For a fun way to see the city, try a water taxi, which will take you to various stops along the water.
2
International Plaza is an upscale shopping destination with both brand-name and luxury stores, plus a number of world-class restaurants, located about 20 minutes away from the port. For upscale boutiques in a picturesque setting, head to Hyde Park Village, just 10 minutes from the port.
3
Tampa, along with the rest of the United States, uses the U.S. Dollar. You’ll find ATMs throughout the city’s most-visited destinations and neighborhoods. Credit cards are widely accepted, though it’s always wise to have some cash on hand. At restaurants and bars, a 15% to 20% tip is suggested.

Day at Sea Highlights

Cozumel, Mexico

Amid the largest coral reef in the West, this Caribbean island lures anglers, divers, snorkelers, and beachgoers. Fish the flats or head out to blue water to hunt for big game—mahi-mahi, marlin, sailfish, and more. Bring your dive card with you on your cruise to Cozumel and witness all the natural wonders waiting below the surface, like neon tropical fish, swaying sea fans, and vibrant coral colonies. Or, go snorkeling to see the show without a dive card. Curl up on the beach in a hammock with a cold one. At Playa Mia, you can even fly down Twin Twister waterslides.

Go cruise shopping for beautiful Mexican silver, amber, and other artisanal gifts in San Miguel. Or, hop a ferry to charming Playa del Carmen, on the mainland, and stroll along la Quinta Avenida for more inviting restaurants, bars, and shops. Down the coast from Playa, you can explore the ancient Maya city of Tulum, perched impressively on a cliff, overlooking the brilliant sea and powdery beach below. Cozumel cuisine means fresh seafood. Savor the catch of the day served on a banana leaf, or enjoy it marinated in lime juice, cilantro, onion, and tomato. Of course, this is the place for Mexican classics like tacos, guacamole—and margaritas.
Travel Tips
1
You can rent a car while in Cozumel to get to the far reaches of the island, including some of the nature excursions and harder-to-reach parks. For daredevils, a scooter or bicycle is an exciting way to navigate the island. Helmets are required. There are plenty of taxis at the cruise terminal and around the island. Taxi drivers know their value on the island, so be sure to settle on a fare before you drive off. It’s easy to explore areas surrounding the port on foot if you feel like stretching your legs during your stop in Cozumel.
2
After you disembark from the cruise ship, particularly at International Pier, you’ll find duty-free shops and souvenir shacks before you leave the terminal. The Royal Village Shopping Center is also conveniently located near International Pier, where you can purchase handmade goods, jewelry, and other items. San Miguel has plentiful shopping, just two or three miles away from International Pier. Look out for silver jewelry, handmade ceramics, colorful hammocks, beach fashions, and papier-mache ornaments.
3
Though the local currency is the peso, many stores will accept U.S. dollars (USD), so you likely won’t need to exchange money. Find ATMs near the cruise docks for all your withdrawal needs. Tipping is encouraged, particularly for bartenders, tour guides, and restaurant service. A tip of 15-20% is recommended.

Belize City, Belize

Pristine Belize sets aside a fifth of its area as nature preserves, and the human history dates back 4,000 years. Today, gregarious Belizeans include mestizo, Creole, Maya, Garinagu, Mennonite, Chinese, and Indian cultures. Belize City pivots around its beloved Swing Bridge. When boats need to navigate Haulover Creek, several strong-armed Belizeans crank open the relic. North of Swing Bridge, the Museum of Belize, once a prison, displays amazing ceramics, jade, and Maya artifacts. To the south, visit stately Government House, a museum with Victorian artifacts

On local tours, you can see manatees lumbering, crocodiles sunning, black howler monkeys screeching, and colorful parrots swooping. West of Belize City, the Belize Zoo is home to powerful jaguars, jabiru storks, and howler monkeys. The huge Belize Barrier Reef offers spectacular diving, snorkeling, and fishing. You can take a boat to Ambergris Caye or Rendezvous Caye. At Lighthouse Reef Atoll, the famous Blue Hole plunges 400 feet deep.

You can also explore the history of the Mayan ruins on your cruise to Belize. At Altun Ha, climb the 60-foot Temple of the Sun God, look down onto the plaza, and imagine the ceremonies that took place there 3,000 years ago. You can also visit Xunantunich, near Guatemala, or take a river safari to remote Lamanai.

Shop here for jade, which makes beautiful jewelry and gifts. Distinctive arts and crafts also include watercolors, oils, prints, baskets, turquoise jewelry, mahogany sculptures, and black slate carvings. Chefs fuse traditional dishes with papaya, mango, and other Caribbean fruits to create new flavors and aromas. Seafood caught this morning becomes the ceviche served tonight, and the local version incorporates lobster, shrimp, or conch, with onions, peppers, tomatoes, and spices. Popular local “stew chicken” gets spiked with habanero peppers.
Travel Tips
1
There are several national landmarks within walking distance of the Belize City cruise port, including the Museum of Belize, St. John’s Cathedral, and the Swing Bridge. If you want to venture further afield, hail a taxi. There are water taxis that will take you to San Pedro and Caye Caulker, both famed for their gorgeous beaches and world-class diving.
2
In the Fort Street Tourism Village, where you’ll disembark your tender, you’ll find duty-free shops, along with locally made chocolate and artisanal jewelry for sale. Look for habanero pepper sauces, hand-woven Mayan baskets, wood carvings, and the local One Barrel Rum.
3
The local currency is the Belize dollar, although the United States dollar is accepted in most major shops and restaurants. There’s usually a 10% service charge added to your dining bill. Tipping isn’t mandatory in Belize, but if you experienced excellent service, feel free to leave extra.

Costa Maya, Mexico

Costa Maya boasts beautiful beaches on the Caribbean Sea, which is ideal for divers and snorkelers alike who enjoy exploring the beautiful Banco Chinchorro coral reef that lies just off the coast. History buffs will surely love exploring the lesser-known Mayan ruins, Cacchoben and Kohunlich; meanwhile there's something for everyone at the new shopping mall, which, while great for shopping, also features a central plaza with saltwater pools and 'swim-up' bars.
Travel Tips
1
The pier at Costa Maya is long, and on a hot day, you might want to take the free trolley service from your ship to the port village. All the attractions of the village itself are accessible on foot. Otherwise, there’s a shuttle bus to Mahahual, the nearest beach, for a small fee. Taxis wait outside the port and golf carts are available to rent. You can rent a car, too, but most visitors choose to book shore excursions.
2
Cruises to Costa Maya, Mexico, put you right in the middle of a vast array of shopping opportunities. Discover elaborate, hand-painted plates, traditional blown-glass pieces, woven Mexican blankets, and beautiful silver and turquoise jewelry. A Maya-style hand-woven hammock makes a great souvenir, as do hand-painted Talavera tiles, a Spanish legacy. If you’re looking for an edible souvenir, pick up a pack of vanilla, a costly spice that’s widely available in Mexico. There are dozens of shops within the port itself, but you may find a greater choice if you extend your search to nearby Mahahual.
3
The currency in Mexico is the peso, although U.S. dollars are widely accepted. If you pay cash in dollars, you may receive change in pesos, so pay attention as their value is completely different. Also, the same dollar sign is used for both pesos and U.S. dollars, so always double-check prices. ATMs are located at the cruise terminal and dispense U.S. dollars. Mexico has a strong tipping culture, especially in tourist areas. Tip 10% to 20% in restaurants, and round up the fare in a taxi. Tip local guides up to 10% of the cost of the tour. It’s preferable to tip in pesos rather than dollars.
