Fort Lauderdale, Florida

In the 1800s, William Lauderdale built a fort. Today, 16 million visitors come each year for miles of broad white sandy beaches, dozens of lush green golf courses, and Caribbean cruises from Fort Lauderdale. Stroll the famous beachfront promenade, just 15 minutes from the port, and plunge into the warm Atlantic.

Head downtown to Las Olas Boulevard, paralleling New River, to sip lattes in outdoor cafés, shop chic boutiques, and catch concerts at the performing arts center. Stop at Stranahan House, the city's oldest structure, built in 1901 as a trading post and preserved as a museum, or explore a whole village of historic buildings at History Fort Lauderdale. Join a Segway tour along the river or a waterborne cruise of Millionaire's Row.

During your cruise to Fort Lauderdale, head out to the Everglades and enjoy Flamingo Gardens, home to pink flamingos, snarling alligators, black bears, and Florida panthers—plus exotic trees, butterfly gardens, and native flowers.

You'll find great shopping on Fort Lauderdale cruises. Look for high fashion at Galleria Fort Lauderdale, north of the port and blocks from the ocean. Head west to Sawgrass Mills for 350 designer outlets, specialty shops, and eateries. Spend a relaxing day in downtown Hollywood, south of the port, for quaint shops, sidewalk cafés, and events in the park.

Discover Floribbean cuisine, a fusion of old Florida favorites with new Caribbean influences. Local seafood includes lobster, grouper, mahi-mahi, pompano, snapper, tuna, and stone crabs.

Florida dominates production of citrus fruits. Before you cruise from Fort Lauderdale, take advantage of anything orange—juices, sauces, marinades, marmalades, dressings, soups, and cakes. Try authentic key lime pie, which is sweet, tart, creamy, and yellow—not green—in a Graham cracker crust.
Travel Tips
1
Fort Lauderdale’s Riverwalk and beachfronts are fairly walkable, but you’re better off getting a taxi, using rideshares, or renting a car for longer distances. You can also take the Tri-Rail, which makes more frequent stops in South Florida. The distinctive Brightline trains will whisk you to Miami in just 38 minutes and West Palm Beach in 45 minutes. The Sun Trolley, meanwhile, is a fun way to navigate the city, as is the Riverwalk Water Trolley.
2
Though a little further from Port Everglades, Sawgrass Mills Mall is a huge shopping complex with over 350 outlets, designer shops, and restaurants. You could spend an entire day shopping here. For shopping a little closer to the cruise port, head to The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale.
3
The U.S. Dollar (USD) is the official currency in Fort Lauderdale and all other areas of Florida. You’ll find ATMs almost everywhere. If you need to exchange currencies, most airports and large banks have exchange centers available. While at a bar or restaurant, a tip of 15% to 20% for good service is part of the culture. Be sure to tip your barista, taxi driver, or bellhop as well.

Day at Sea Highlights

Oranjestad, Aruba

The capital of Aruba is made for walking. Browse the candy-colored townhouses, architectural details, and open-air patios that define this charming Dutch community. Gentle trade winds tame the Caribbean sun, shoo the infrequent rain, and maintain the perfect conditions for windsurfing and kiteboarding. When it’s beach time, dig your toes into the soft white sand and soak your skin in the warm Caribbean water. After lounging awhile, find spas, restaurants, and bars just steps away. Divers and snorkelers flock to cruise to Aruba for its vibrant coral reefs, neon tropical fish, and eerie old shipwrecks. With just a mask and snorkel, you can watch the fish dart in and out of Antilla, a major wreck. Board a catamaran for a peaceful day of sailing and snorkeling, recharging with a barbecue lunch at Pelican Pier on Palm Beach. Or, venture to De Palm Island for water sliding and banana boat riding. When it’s time to shop, browse Aruba’s boutiques and find the leading designers at Renaissance Mall. Uncover local crafts in the marketplace nearby. Both are close to the port. Aruba serves French fare with a Caribbean twist. Find everything from haute cuisine to casual food. Maybe even discover an ostrich burger on the menu. Of course, the fish doesn’t get any fresher.
Travel Tips
1
Getting around compact Aruba is easy. There’s a good bus service linking Oranjestad with various points on the island, as well as multiple self-drive options. Rent a scooter, an ATV, a bicycle, or a car, or take a taxi. The roads are paved and generally in good condition, and you can easily drive around the island in a day, incorporating various stops for swimming and eating.
2
The port is centrally located near shops and restaurants, so it’s an easy transition to go from ship to shopping. Here, you’ll find mostly strip malls and shopping centers like the Renaissance Marketplace. Things to buy include aloe products, Cuban cigars, and Dutch delicacies, from tins of caramel stroopwafel to cheeses. You’ll find duty-free shops and high-end fashion brands, too. For more arty gifts, browse the boutiques of San Nicolas, where you’ll find clothing, local crafts, and jewelry.
3
The official currency of Aruba is the Aruban florin (Afl), but U.S. dollars are commonly accepted in most places. ATMs are prevalent on the island, and many restaurants will accept credit cards, too. Tipping isn’t a very common practice in Aruba, but leaving 10% for your taxi driver and 15% for your server at a restaurant is polite. There may already be a service charge included in your restaurant bill, but this goes into a tip pool, not directly to your server.

Day at Sea Highlights

Samana, Dominican Republic

Tucked along the northeastern coast of the Dominican Republic, Samaná is a lush peninsula where mountains meet the sea. Known for its dramatic coastline, swaying coconut palms, and pristine beaches, this hidden gem offers a quieter, more laid-back side of Caribbean island life.

From January through March, Samaná Bay becomes one of the best spots in the world to witness humpback whales, who migrate here each winter to breed and give birth. Beyond whale watching, guests can explore Los Haitises National Park by boat, wander through mangrove forests, or relax on the powdery white sands of Playa Rincón, consistently ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. Adventure seekers can zip-line through the rainforest canopy or hike to El Limón waterfall, while those looking to unwind can sample fresh coconut water straight from the source or stroll the charming malecón in Santa Bárbara de Samaná town.

With its blend of natural beauty, outdoor adventure, and authentic local culture, Samaná offers something for every type of traveler.

Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos

There's a place for those who want to slow the pace of life. That place is Grand Turk, the capital of the Turks and Caicos. That's not to say that shore excursions on Grand Turk don't run the gamut from horseback riding to stingray swims to catamaran tours—and one of the biggest draws here is diving, with the islands lying along the third largest barrier reef in the world. But traffic is sparse, and with a population of less than 4,000, everybody really does know everybody else's name. There are no fast food restaurants or chain hotels. You may even see a horse or donkey, once a means of transportation during the days of Grand Turk's salting industry, roaming along Governor's Beach or through the narrow alleys in historic Cockburn Town.
Travel Tips
1
The island is only seven square miles, so you can easily explore it in a day. However, there’s little shade, and out of Cockburn Town, few sidewalks, so vehicle rental is best. Cars, Jeeps, golf carts, scooters, and bicycles are all available. Bear in mind that driving here is on the left, as Turks and Caicos is a British Overseas Territory. Taxis wait at the cruise terminal but do not have meters, so agree on the fare in advance. There’s also a hop-on, hop-off open-sided tram that picks up at the cruise terminal and circles the island. Make sure you know the schedule before hopping off as it is your responsibility to get back to your ship on time. The best way to explore the island and return to the ship on time is to book a shore excursion.
2
For duty-free goods, including jewelry, you don’t need to stray beyond the cruise terminal, where there’s a big shopping complex. Otherwise, you’ll find a few galleries and craft shops along Front Street in Cockburn Town. The shop at the National Museum, also on Front Street, has authentic souvenirs including books, prints of vintage postcards, model boats, and hats. Many visitors are tempted to take home some beautiful conch shells as souvenirs. Be aware that, as conch is an endangered species, only three mature shells per person are permitted, and export of the meat or juvenile shells is illegal.
3
The currency of Turks and Caicos is the U.S. Dollar. Most places take credit cards, but beach vendors and small souvenir stalls may not, so always carry some cash. There are a couple of ATMS in Cockburn Town and one at the cruise terminal. Tipping culture is similar to that of the U.S. It’s normal to tip 10-15% in a restaurant, taxi, or bar, but if a service charge of 10% has already been added, it’s acceptable to leave a little less.
