Buenos Aires, Argentina

The capital of Argentina throbs with creative energy. In this melting pot of cultures—native American, Spanish colonial, Italian, French, British, and more—the local Porteños greet you warmly with a kiss. Connoisseurs of culture find 300 theaters and 160 museums. Explore the French neoclassical Museo Nacional de Arte Decorativo, near the port, or Teatro Colón, an opera house with interiors as beautiful as the acoustics, in the Centro. You'll shop till you drop in Buenos Aires, a leader in design. Find clothing, jewelry, and art at lavish Galerías Pacifico, near the port, or browse the fashionable Recoleta quarter for exclusive boutiques. Shop elegant Calle Florida, bustling with bustling with office workers by day and street performers at night. Look for native leather, antiques, and crafts. Eat and drink like a king on your cruise to Argentina, from elegant 19th-century bars to contemporary cafés and restaurants. Discover maté, the local tea, and don't miss the renowned steaks and excellent Malbec wines. Find pizza, pasta, and ice cream on every corner. For dessert, try alfajores, chocolate-covered double-decker cookies filled with dulce de leche.
Travel Tips
1
Walking is the best way to get around the heart of the city, the center of which is laid out in a grid system. A free public bike system is also a good option for those who enjoy exploring on two wheels. The quick and efficient Subte, or underground metro system, is reasonably efficient, but can get very hot in summer. The city also has an efficient bus network and an abundance of black-and-yellow taxis, which can be hailed on the street. Your Uber app will work here, too.
2
There’s a reason Buenos Aires is dubbed the “Paris of South America”; shoppers will be in paradise here. Things to buy include leather goods, jewelry, ornate mate gourds, silver bombillas for drinking yerba mate, jars of dulce de leche, and fine Argentinian wines. Some of the best shopping areas include upscale Recoleta for designer clothing, San Telmo for vintage, and the ornately frescoed Galerías Pacifico, a stylish mall with an inviting food court.
3
The currency of the region is the Argentine peso. In Buenos Aires, most places will accept credit cards, although there might be a fee for each transaction. Often, paying with cash is better. If you pay with U.S. dollars, you’ll be given change in pesos, so check it carefully. There are ATMs all over the city. Argentina has a moderate tipping culture, although it’s always better to tip in cash rather than trying to round up the bill. Tip 10% in a restaurant for good service, and offer the equivalent of $5 to $10 per person to a good guide. You could round up the bill for a kind taxi driver, but remember that a few pesos is practically worthless; work it out by percentage instead and leave 5% to 10%.

Day at Sea Highlights

Rio De Janeiro, Brazil

Samba on down to Rio, famous for its dramatic landscape and beach culture, easy going except for the four days of frenetic, feather-festooned Carnival. From the summits of Sugarloaf to Corcovado in the national park, there are many opportunities to take in the breathtaking natural beauty of the city. Cruises to Rio de Janeiro are not complete without a cable car ride or walking tour for 360-degree views of Guanabara Bay, the city of Niteroi, and so much more. Check out the activity at one or two of the 23 beaches, including the Copacabana and Ipanema, crowded with beautiful sunbathers and swimmers, and populated by surfers, bikers. Pull up a chair at a Churrascaria Palace, and dine on the delicious traditional regional barbecue of your choice, washed down with a Caipirinha, the national cocktail. Head to the Museu Historico Nacional to explore the fascinating historic relics and some of Brazil’s treasures, like the throne of Dom Pedro II, imperial coaches, oil paintings, and a full-size replica of a colonial pharmacy.
Travel Tips
1
When you’re getting around in Rio, it can be easy to get lost in this massive city, which is one of Brazil’s most populated. Yellow taxis are abundant in the city, and they’re one of the most popular ways to get around Rio’s sights. Ubers are also available in Rio. Of course, the city has an extensive bus and metro system for skilled navigators. Best of all, downtown Rio de Janeiro is pretty walkable, as well as many of its scenic neighborhoods, so you can leisurely take in the city on foot, too.
2
There’s not a lot of shopping near Pier Maua, but you won’t have to go far to find the action you’re looking for in downtown Rio, where you’ll stumble upon standard souvenir and tourist fare or beachwear stores. Every Sunday, there’s a craft and arts fair in Ipanema, and in Santa Teresa, you’ll find a variety of antique stores and vintage shops. Browse the vintage digs and trinkets to bring home a piece of Brazil when you head back to the ship.
3
In Brazil, the official currency is the Brazilian real (BRL). You’ll be able to find a currency exchange at the cruise port terminal as well as banks across Rio de Janeiro. Tipping while on cruises to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is the same standard you’d find in the United States. Leave 15-20% tip for your restaurant waitstaff, bartenders, and tour guides. Leave a couple extra reais for taxi drivers or other helpful staff during your time in Brazil. In general, credit cards are accepted most places you’d go, unless you’re stopping to buy something from a vendor along the beach.

Day at Sea Highlights

Salvador de Bahia, Brazil

This capital of Bahia state and fourth-largest city in Brazil was founded by the Portuguese in 1549, and its historic Pelourinho district is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The colorful center of Salvador is like a museum of colonial architecture, with more than 300 churches, including São Francisco, recognized for its grandiosity. The city has an unmatched energy and unadorned beauty, with street festivals breaking out routinely and drums pounding out the rhythms. This is the heart of the country’s Afro-Brazilian community, where the culture of those brought as slaves has been preserved, from music and religion to food and dance. Be sure to experience capoeira, the martial art that looks like dance. Out on the Atlantic coast, beautiful Bahia beaches beckon to bathers.
Travel Tips
1
Salvador has a vast system of buses and a metro used often by locals. Taxis are common in the area surrounding the Salvador cruise port. Ridesharing apps are also available. If you’re looking to go beyond the historic district, you’ll want to make transportation plans via taxi or bus before you head to the nearby beaches, or book a shore excursion.
2
The most famous shopping area in Salvador is the renowned Mercato Modelo, which is conveniently close to the Salvador cruise port. You’ll find over 250 shops and vendors selling their wares, including handmade arts and crafts and classic Brazilian souvenirs.
3
The official currency of the country is the Brazilian real. On a cruise to Salvador de Bahia, you’ll want to have some cash on hand to shop at smaller institutions or local boutiques at the Mercato Modelo. Tipping isn’t customary in Brazil, but leaving a 10% tip for bartenders and servers is appreciated. Tipping your taxi drivers isn’t a common practice in Brazil.

Day at Sea Highlights

Tenerife, Canary Islands

Beyond its steep and rugged coastline, Tenerife is a cultural and natural wonder waiting to be explored. Discover mysterious step pyramids at Güímar, meet the world’s largest collection of parrots at Loro Park, or take in a show at the ultra-modern Tenerife Auditorium. Foodies will have fun sampling the fresh fish, famous cheeses and sumptuous wines of the island.Of the 7 islands that comprise the Canary Island archipelago, Tenerife stands out as the largest. Depending on your mood and what you are looking to get out of your Tenerife cruise, there are things to consider. For one, the island offers a vastly different terrain depending on where you go. The northern part of the island is quite verdant, so expect the climate to include more rain. In the south, you’ll find it much more arid and dry emulating more of a desert climate. If you like the idea of mingling within crowds and are drawn to where the action is, make plans to visit Los Cristianos, Playa de la Americas, and Costa Adeje in the southwest and Puerto de la Cruz in the north. While in Los Cristianos and you’re looking for some thrills, visit Siam Park, a giant theme park with plenty of rides to choose from. Also in Los Cristianos is Jungle Park, the island’s zoo with over 500 animals in a wonderfully rendered wild setting with lagoons, walkways and sub-tropical foliage.
Travel Tips
1
Tenerife has an impressive public transportation network, and you can reach quite a few places independently from the port in Santa Cruz. The best beach in the area, the long, golden Playa de las Teresitas, is a short bus journey away, while Tram Line 1 takes you to enchanting La Laguna, the former capital of the island, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Car rental is available near the port gates, should you wish to explore independently.
2
There are plenty of authentic souvenirs to look for in Tenerife beyond the usual fridge magnets. Pick up a beautiful manta esperancera, a colorful woolen shawl, or a piece of delicate calado embroidery. You’ll find beauty and after-sun products made from locally grown aloe vera, as well as decorated pottery and ceramics. Edible souvenirs include smoked or cured cheese, jars of spicy red or green mojo, ready-made bienmesabe paste, and delicious island honey, which has its own designation of origin. The best place to buy these is the city’s Nuestra Señora de Africa gourmet market, packed with mouthwatering displays of island produce.
3
The currency in Tenerife, which is part of Spain, is the euro. You will find ATMs in all the major towns, and most vendors will accept cards. Tenerife does not have a big tipping culture; in a restaurant, 5-10% of the bill is appreciated for good service, while you can round up the fare in a taxi. It’s not necessary to tip bartenders.

Day at Sea Highlights

Seville (Cadiz), Spain

From Cádiz you can easily get to Seville, exploring the old town with its quaint Moorish feel as well as its impressive monuments, pretty parks and lovely architecture. Along the way, restore your energy at any of the mouth-watering tapas bars offering some of the country’s finest seafood and typical Andalusian cuisine.
Travel Tips
1
Seville has excellent public transportation, although many of the main sights are walkable if you pace yourself in the heat. There’s one tram line, Metrocentro, which connects Plaza Nueva and the San Bernardo train station via four stops, including the Cathedral and the Alcázar Palace. You’ll also find an efficient bus network and a small metro system, used mainly by commuters. Taxis are widely available, as are rideshare services. One of the best ways to get around is on two wheels; Seville has miles of safe cycle paths and an easy-to-use bike rental program called Sevici. The city is flat, so you shouldn’t get too tired, and there are plenty of e-bikes available.
2
Seville has excellent shopping, from high-end designers to chic Spanish department stores such as El Corte Ingles on Plaza del Duque, as well as boho markets and independent boutiques. Calle Sierpes is the place to head for designer fashion, while Calle Tetuan, which runs parallel, is another option for shoes, souvenirs, and clothing. Cross over the Guadalquivir River to the indoor Triana Market, and browse the Triana neighborhood for beautiful ceramics. Other souvenirs to look out for include painted tiles, frilly aprons, pretty folding fans, and flamenco dresses.
3
The currency in Spain is the Euro. There are ATMs all over Seville, although most places accept contactless cards and cash transactions are increasingly rare. Spain does not have a strong tipping culture; if you’ve received good service in a restaurant or tapas bar, it’s customary to leave 10 percent. A good tour guide would appreciate €5 to €10 in cash, but it’s not necessary to offer any more.

Malaga, Spain

Malaga is the gateway to the Andalusian countryside and the Costa del Sol, some of the region's most impressive beaches. It also is home to a number of magnificent palaces, including the Moorish Alcabaza and Gibralfaro.
Travel Tips
1
It’s easy to traipse around Malaga without a car, and many cruise ships visiting Malaga recommend that passengers walk around the city. There’s also a bike rental service and taxis available from the cruise port. A hop-on/hop-off bus for tourists runs frequently, too.
2
Malaga’s best shopping is found in the center of the city, specifically along Calle Marques de Larios. There are many shopping centers located throughout the city for those looking for department store finds, designer goods, and other wares at varying price points. Souvenirs are available for purchase at the terminal where Malaga cruises stop, which many people pick up before heading back to their ship.
3
The euro is the official currency of Spain. Passengers on cruise ships visiting Malaga will find plenty of currency exchanges and ATMs in the city. Tipping is considered unusual in Spain for the most part, but rounding up to the nearest euro for your cab driver or giving 5% to 10% at a restaurant is considered more than polite in most circumstances.

Day at Sea Highlights

Barcelona, Spain

Formerly a sleepy Spanish city, Barcelona has recently been reborn as an eclectic fusion of the modern and medieval. This coastal city exudes European charm and welcomes multitudes of travelers every year. It’s a major destination with must-see architectural gems that date back some 2,000 years. You’ll encounter fascinating examples from the Roman Empire, the Middle Ages, the Modern masters like Gaudî, and many Cataluñian greats. Outstanding art museums can be found throughout the city, proudly displaying the works of world-renowned artists and countrymen, including Goya, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalî, and Joan Miró. For a respite from the hustle and bustle of the city center, venture to the awaiting Mediterranean Sea and all the seaside has to offer. Maybe a brisk hike in the nearby forest covered Collserola Hills or the hilltop in Montjuïc with its botanical gardens is the perfect recharge for a rollicking evening in one of the premier party capitals of the world. Round out your cruise to Barcelona dining at a tapas bar and savor a variety of delicious small dishes to share—from traditional Spanish to the more innovative.
Travel Tips
1
Barcelona is a pedestrian-friendly city with plenty of public transportation options. From the Port Terminal, there is a shuttle bus service that will drop you off directly in Las Ramblas. There are hop-on, hop-off buses, bike rentals and plenty of cycle lanes, an efficient metro system, and abundant taxis and ride-hailing services. You can walk, too, but distances between neighborhoods are quite long in the heat. To visit Montjuic for the Miró Foundation and other attractions, take the scenic cable car from the port.
2
Souvenir stalls line Las Ramblas, but beware of fakes here. You’ll find much more authentic clothing and craft items in the Gothic Quarter, and quirky, boho fashions in El Born and El Raval. There’s mainstream and Spanish fashion galore around Plaça Catalunya and designer shops along chic Passeig de Gracia. Shop for food gifts in La Boqueria market, and for the best Gaudí-inspired souvenirs, the excellent gift shop at the Sagrada Familia basilica.
3
In Barcelona, the currency is the euro. You won’t have any trouble finding ATMs throughout the city. Exchange offices are typically open for later hours than banks, but you will receive a better exchange rate at most banks. There’s not a big tipping culture here, but 5% to 10% is a suitable token for good service in a restaurant. Round up the bill for taxis if paying in cash. There’s no need to tip bartenders.
