Benoa (Bali), Indonesia

Bali is a bucket-list destination that’s home to some of the most breathtaking beaches in the world, rich culture and traditions, and an incredible fusion of cuisines. With vibrant reefs close to shore, snorkeling from the white-sand beaches of the south is a must-do. No cruise to Bali is complete without a visit to Tanjung Benoa Beach. It’s located just north of the busier and more developed resort areas, and the calm surf and smooth sand make it an ideal beach for families. Just down the main road, you’ll find a vibrant fishing village and plenty of chances to experience the less-traveled side of this exotic wonderland. On your cruise to Bali, be sure to catch an authentic Kecak fire dance performance. Haggle for handmade art, jewelry, carvings, fabrics, and more at the bustling markets. And visit the Pura Lahur Uluwatu, an iconic Balinese temple perched more than 800 feet above the Indian Ocean. Nothing says “paradise” like a cruise to Bali with the best premium cruise line.
Travel Tips
1
The easiest and most convenient way to get around the island on your Bali cruise is by private car or a metered taxi known as a “Bluebird”. Central tourist areas of Benoa such as Nusa Dua are walkable, but in the humidity of the tropics, you may find car transport more comfortable and convenient. If you’re in a group, you can ride with a private minivan (known as Bemo) service, or book larger shuttles and buses to accommodate more people.
2
As an island that’s lured artistic and creative types for decades, Bali offers plenty of shopping opportunities. Shop at the Mertha Segara Samuh Art Market for hand-made souvenirs with bright colored tapestries and Hindu-inspired iconography available at practically any of the market’s stalls. Visit the Bali Collection complex for a more upscale experience, complete with dining and entertainment options to accompany you as you shop. Handmade jewelry, leather purses, natural products, beachwear, sarongs, batiks, and paintings are all great souvenirs of the island.
3
The local currency in Bali is the Indonesian rupiah, and ATMs are abundant around both the main city center and surrounding beaches. Try to pay with cash when you can, and be careful when using a credit card at smaller stores, as they may not accept them. Tipping is not customary in Benoa, however, tour guides and restaurant workers are always grateful for a polite gratuity.

Day at Sea Highlights

Port Klang, Malaysia

Less than an hour from the Port is bustling Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's modern capital city. It rose up from the forbidding jungle terrain to become one of the most fascinating architectural landscapes on earth. A blend of native Malaysian, Chinese Imperial, and European influences has created a city that is as breathtakingly beautiful as it is alive with culture. Replete with fine dining, a fertile arts community and plenty of nightlife, Kuala Lumpur has earned a reputation as a must-see world destination.

Penang, Malaysia

Often called the "Pearl of the Orient," this northern gateway to Malaysia is the country's oldest British settlement. Although this city is best known for its breathtaking beaches, sites such as Khoo Kongsi, a well-preserved ancestral Chinese clan house, and the Butterfly Farm, the world’s first tropical live butterfly exhibition, must-sees on the list for this amazing destination. Also visit Kek Lok Si Temple, one of the finest Buddhist temples in Southeast Asia, featuring among other things, a tortoise sanctuary.
Travel Tips
1
Penang has many options for transportation, and all are available conveniently outside of the cruise terminal and around the center of George Town. There are many options for group travel via shuttle or bus if needed. If you prefer to travel by taxi, try to book one while inside the terminal. For a really fun local experience, take a ride on a pedal-powered rickshaw, or trishaw, to get around the center of town.
2
You’ll find lots of great shopping options near the port while on a Penang cruise. Head to Gurney Plaza for higher-end fashion brands and electronics shopping, or peruse the many souvenir stalls that line the jetties, specializing in Chinese goods and trinkets. Look out for spices, preserved tropical fruits, silks, and batik. For a unique shopping experience, visit the flea market at Lorong Kulit, but make sure to go early, as it closes each day in the early afternoon.
3
The local currency in Penang is the Malaysian ringgit. You’ll find plenty of ATMs and banks within the central area of George Town where you can withdraw cash, but fewer as you go out into the countryside. It’s recommended to use cash when you can, as skimming can often happen with cards in certain areas, and small vendors may not accept card payments for low-priced purchases. Tipping is not customary, however many taxi and rickshaw drivers, hotel staff, and tour guides are accustomed to receiving small tips from visitors who find their service accommodating.

Langkawi, Malaysia

Let your imagination soar among the many magical myths and legends surrounding the 99 islands of Langkawi. Replete with ancient geological wonders like mysterious caves and mist-enrobed mountains, this premier vacation spot is a spectacular tropical paradise. The Pulau Payar Marine Park, located about 19 miles south of Langkawi, has everything from long, sandy white beaches and crystal-clear water to lush rain forests and exotic vegetation. The park includes an underwater coral garden, where you can swim and snorkel amidst multi-colored fish.
Travel Tips
1
Public transportation isn’t always reliable in Langkawi, but this shouldn’t be an issue thanks to an abundance of other options. Tour buses and taxis will meet you right at the dock, and you can also rent a car or motorbike. Taxis have fixed rates. When driving, be diligent and mindful about local traffic laws and often chaotic roads. As it’s hot and humid year-round, don’t overestimate the amount of walking you might want to do. There are bicycle options in some areas, and bikes are a great way to get around the boardwalk on the waterfront area near the terminal.
2
There are many great shopping options available on cruises to Langkawi, with great duty-free offerings as well. You’ll find lots of popular international brands at the Langkawi Fair Shopping Mall, or Jetty Point Complex next to the Kuah Jetty and Eagle Square. For more of an artisan shopping experience, head to the Atma Alam Batik Village, a batik textile factory with a showroom that features exquisite, authentic textiles, bags, paintings, purses, and more.
3
The local currency in Langkawi is the Malaysian ringgit, and cash can be withdrawn fairly easily from numerous ATMs spread throughout the capital of Kuah and other popular tourist towns. Cards are accepted by most restaurants, hotels, and major tour companies. For smaller merchants and taxis, it’s recommended to use cash. Tipping, as in the rest of Malaysia, is not customary, but small tips for restaurant servers, hotel staff, and tour guides are always appreciated.

Phuket, Thailand

Thailand's largest and most visited island, Phuket, offers gorgeous beaches lined with palm trees, plus fabulous coves and bays. Water sports include sailing, diving, and snorkeling. Golf enthusiasts will love the championship courses, while nature lovers will be thrilled by the tropical forests and waterfalls. Tour historic mansions and top off the day enjoying the extensive nightlife.
Travel Tips
1
The town of Phuket is about a 20-minute drive away from the cruise port, and most cruise passengers take a cab or bus to get to the city when their cruise to Phuket docks. You can arrange to use the same driver throughout your day in Phuket if you wish, which tends to get you a better deal. Many visitors download the app Grab to hail a taxi.
2
Because of how popular Phuket has become, there’s plenty of outdoor markets and shopping malls to keep you occupied. Antiques and jewelry are staples at local night markets like the Phuket Weekend Market, where you can barter your way to a great deal on local goods, or just snack away at one of the many food stands. There’s also Phuket Walking Street in Old Town, where coffee shops, restaurants, and bars are ready to meet any craving. Plus, it’s a must-go spot for souvenirs to bring back after your cruise to Phuket.
3
The official currency used in Thailand is the baht. Exchange currency once you get into Thailand for a better exchange rate. ATMs are plentiful in Phuket, but will usually include a service charge. Credit cards are generally accepted in many places, but it’s good to carry cash with you, too. Tipping isn’t a common practice in Phuket, but rounding up to the nearest bill for your taxi driver is polite. When dining in high quality or expensive restaurants, it’s common to include a 10% tip of your total bill.

Day at Sea Highlights

Singapore, Singapore

At first glance, this diamond-shaped island just off the coast of Malaysia gleams with modernism and commercialism, making it seem more Western than Eastern. But as you continue to discover the city-state, you'll uncover the eclectic mix of cultures, religions, ancient treasures and British colonial impressions that give rise to a unique Singaporean identity. The cultural fusion is perhaps best expressed in Singapore's unofficial language, Singlish, a unique patois of English, Chinese and Malay.
Travel Tips
1
Singapore’s Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system is comprehensive and easy to navigate, not to mention efficient, safe, and clean. Hop off at the Marina South Pier station, just a short walk from the Marina Bay Cruise Centre, after spending time in downtown Singapore and the city’s main sights. Taxis are common in Singapore, but only stop at designated stands to drop you off once you’re in the city to curb traffic. Singapore doesn’t host services like Uber or Lyft; the local ride-hailing service is called Grab. The city’s trishaws are mostly a tourist activity now, so be careful not to pay too much for one.
2
Find luxury brands and well-known names when you’re shopping at the Marina Bay Sands Mall, which is just a short 15-minute ride from the cruise center, particularly if you’re interested in high fashion and Singaporean designers. Singapore’s Chinatown is also a must-see for its energy, with plenty of independent shops, cool boutiques, and hawker food centers where you can refuel. For the most high-end shopping, head to Orchard Road, lined with air-conditioned malls and designer labels.
3
The official currency of Singapore is the Singaporean dollar (S$). Tipping isn’t common practice in Singapore, and credit cards are considered the norm here. You can find currency exchange at banks and conveniently at the cruise port, called the Marina Bay Cruise Centre Singapore.
