Sydney, Australia

Considered one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the Southern Hemisphere, Sydney offers so much—from beaches and wineries to stunning landmarks and world-class shopping. Tour architectural marvels like the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbor Bridge, view life below the surface from Sydney Aquarium’s underwater walkways, or take it all in from above on a tour of the Sydney Tower. You’re never far from nature in this thriving urban center. Well-known surf beaches, zoos, national parks, whale watching tours, bush tours, and the Royal Botanic Gardens—featuring over 7,500 plants—offer visitors a chance to enjoy the area’s sunshine, lush greenery, wildlife, and clear blue oceans. Sydney is not only Australia’s oldest city, it is also one of the most ethnically diverse cities on the globe, offering a wealth of cuisines, unique museums, and cultural opportunities. Explore lively pubs, shops, and historic buildings at The Rocks, located on Sydney harbor.
Travel Tips
1
Sydney has a variety of public transportation options. Its extensive bus route system goes to many of the most popular tourist sites, plus there are a light rail and ferry service. In addition, the Sydney Metro provides fast, frequent service around the city. As for taxis, you’ll find them waiting right outside the Sydney cruise terminal, as well as in taxi ranks all around the city.
2
You will find an assortment of shopping malls near the Sydney cruise port. Some of the largest are Westfield Sydney, The Galeries, and World Square. For local boutiques, head to the intersection of Oxford Street and Glenmore Road. In the neighborhood of Paddington, you’ll find shops with cutting-edge fashion from new designers. For souvenirs and art, head to The Rocks near the Sydney Opera House, or the Strand for Australian hats and boots.
3
Australia’s official currency is the Australian dollar. The paper bills come in increments of $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100. Credit cards are widely accepted, but traveler’s checks are not. Tipping isn’t expected in Australia, but is appreciated. If you do tip, a smaller amount around 10% is usually acceptable.

Day at Sea Highlights

Airlie Beach (Queensland), Australia

On your cruise to the Great Barrier Reef, this is the perfect departure point for local excursions. The coral reef is the largest living thing on the planet—so big you can see it from space—but made of billions of tiny organisms known as polyps.

A UNESCO World Heritage site, the reef supports a vast diversity of marine life, with 600 types of soft and hard corals, 1,625 types of fish, and 30 species of whales and dolphins. Great Barrier Reef Marine Park covers 133,000 square miles, including 3,000 coral reefs and 900 islands. The snorkeling and diving here are unmatched.

Airlie Beach is popular with backpackers, yachtsmen, and other lovers of the tropical lifestyle. Sailing among the calm, protected waters of the Witsunday Islands and skydiving over the pristine shorelines are a couple of the must-do adventures for many visitors.

When it's time for some shopping during your Airlie Beach cruise, you'll find lovely seaside markets and galleries with friendly artists, handmade jewelry, colorful paintings, stunning photos, and tropical beachwear—perfect for a leisurely browse after breakfast.
Travel Tips
1
One of the most popular ways to get around Airlie Beach is a local shuttle bus that takes passengers around the area’s flea market. The downtown area is also fairly walkable and easy to get around on foot. It’s about a 10-minute walk from where your cruise ship will tender to the town center.
2
There’s a quick shuttle available to a craft market in Airlie Beach, where you can shop for jewelry, handmade goods, clothing, and art. The town also has a variety of beach shops, souvenir shacks, cafes, and supermarkets.
3
The official currency of Australia is the Australian dollar (AUD). Credit cards are widely accepted, including Mastercard, American Express, and Visa. It’s helpful to carry a little bit of cash with you during your Airlie Beach cruise. Tipping in Australia isn’t customary, so tipping a taxi driver or tour guide is uncommon.

Cairns (Yorkey's Knob), Australia

In tropical North Queensland, surrounded on three sides by lush rainforest, your Cairns cruise makes the perfect launchpad for excursions to the Great Barrier Reef. This reef is the largest living thing on the planet—so big you can see it from space—but it's made up of billions of tiny organisms known as coral polyps.

Inland, explore the rainforest by cable car and scenic railway, soaring above treetops, peering into gorges, and observing jungle waterfalls. Join a whitewater rafting adventure in Barron Gorge National Park.

Stop at a rainforest village to see kangaroos, birds, butterflies, and reptiles. Hold a koala in your arms and feed a wallaby. Watch traditional Aboriginal dancers perform and artisans create their pottery, paintings, glass works, jewelry, and fabrics. You can shop for these original keepsakes to take back aboard your Cairns cruise.

Back in town, stroll the lovely native flowers, plants, and trees at Cairns Botanic Gardens. You might even get lucky in the local casino. What a way to top off your cruise to Cairns.
Travel Tips
1
Public buses operate routes all around Cairns, out to its suburbs and neighboring cities, and attractions. In addition, you can find taxis in Cairns.
2
From markets to boutiques to shopping centers, you’ll have a variety of shopping options to choose from during Cairns cruises. Popular souvenirs to get from Cairns include photography prints of the coastline and Great Barrier Reef, jewelry made with local pearls, and quintessential Australian clothing like Akubra hats or locally made leather boots.
3
Tipping is not expected in Australia, and that includes restaurants and bars. It is appreciated, however, and how much to tip for quality service is up to the visitor. In general, you can expect to tip less than you would in the U.S. – think more along the lines of 10% to 12%. As for what to pay and tip with, the official currency in Australia is the Australian Dollar (AUD$). Keep in mind that instead of $1 bills, Australia uses $1 coins, and also has $2 coins. Don’t misplace your loose change as it can add up quickly! Credit cards are also commonly taken in Cairns, with Visa and Mastercard being the most widely accepted.

Port Douglas, Australia

The once-sleepy, now-bustling seaside village of Port Douglas will be your hub to the Great Barrier Reef, home to some 1,500 species of fish, 5,000 species of mollusk and 400 species of coral for your exploration. During your Cruisetour, you'll enjoy a full day of marine adventure with opportunities to swim, snorkel, dive or view the reef from an underwater observatory.
Travel Tips
1
One of the most popular ways to get around in Port Douglas for tourists is the shuttle bus, which runs for $6 AUD. You can also walk or bike around the main parts of town. A 24-hour taxi service called the Port Douglas Taxi is also available. Getting to more remote parts beyond the city is typically best accomplished via bus.
2
The best shopping in town is along Macrossan Street in Port Douglas, which is close to many of the hotels in the area. On Sundays, the street bustles with vendors and locals doing their shopping from 8am to 2pm at the local market, where you can find produce, fruit, handcrafted goods, and more. Arrive early to beat the crowds.
3
The Australian dollar (AUD) is the official currency you’ll use when you arrive on your cruise to Port Douglas. You’ll find that credit cards are widely used in this part of Australia, too. It’s helpful to carry a bit of cash just in case you want to buy something from a small business or street vendor.

Day at Sea Highlights

Singapore, Singapore

At first glance, this diamond-shaped island just off the coast of Malaysia gleams with modernism and commercialism, making it seem more Western than Eastern. But as you continue to discover the city-state, you'll uncover the eclectic mix of cultures, religions, ancient treasures and British colonial impressions that give rise to a unique Singaporean identity. The cultural fusion is perhaps best expressed in Singapore's unofficial language, Singlish, a unique patois of English, Chinese and Malay.
Travel Tips
1
Singapore’s Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system is comprehensive and easy to navigate, not to mention efficient, safe, and clean. Hop off at the Marina South Pier station, just a short walk from the Marina Bay Cruise Centre, after spending time in downtown Singapore and the city’s main sights. Taxis are common in Singapore, but only stop at designated stands to drop you off once you’re in the city to curb traffic. Singapore doesn’t host services like Uber or Lyft; the local ride-hailing service is called Grab. The city’s trishaws are mostly a tourist activity now, so be careful not to pay too much for one.
2
Find luxury brands and well-known names when you’re shopping at the Marina Bay Sands Mall, which is just a short 15-minute ride from the cruise center, particularly if you’re interested in high fashion and Singaporean designers. Singapore’s Chinatown is also a must-see for its energy, with plenty of independent shops, cool boutiques, and hawker food centers where you can refuel. For the most high-end shopping, head to Orchard Road, lined with air-conditioned malls and designer labels.
3
The official currency of Singapore is the Singaporean dollar (S$). Tipping isn’t common practice in Singapore, and credit cards are considered the norm here. You can find currency exchange at banks and conveniently at the cruise port, called the Marina Bay Cruise Centre Singapore.
