Barcelona, Spain

Formerly a sleepy Spanish city, Barcelona has recently been reborn as an eclectic fusion of the modern and medieval. This coastal city exudes European charm and welcomes multitudes of travelers every year. It’s a major destination with must-see architectural gems that date back some 2,000 years. You’ll encounter fascinating examples from the Roman Empire, the Middle Ages, the Modern masters like Gaudî, and many Cataluñian greats. Outstanding art museums can be found throughout the city, proudly displaying the works of world-renowned artists and countrymen, including Goya, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalî, and Joan Miró. For a respite from the hustle and bustle of the city center, venture to the awaiting Mediterranean Sea and all the seaside has to offer. Maybe a brisk hike in the nearby forest covered Collserola Hills or the hilltop in Montjuïc with its botanical gardens is the perfect recharge for a rollicking evening in one of the premier party capitals of the world. Round out your cruise to Barcelona dining at a tapas bar and savor a variety of delicious small dishes to share—from traditional Spanish to the more innovative.
Travel Tips
1
Barcelona is a pedestrian-friendly city with plenty of public transportation options. From the Port Terminal, there is a shuttle bus service that will drop you off directly in Las Ramblas. There are hop-on, hop-off buses, bike rentals and plenty of cycle lanes, an efficient metro system, and abundant taxis and ride-hailing services. You can walk, too, but distances between neighborhoods are quite long in the heat. To visit Montjuic for the Miró Foundation and other attractions, take the scenic cable car from the port.
2
Souvenir stalls line Las Ramblas, but beware of fakes here. You’ll find much more authentic clothing and craft items in the Gothic Quarter, and quirky, boho fashions in El Born and El Raval. There’s mainstream and Spanish fashion galore around Plaça Catalunya and designer shops along chic Passeig de Gracia. Shop for food gifts in La Boqueria market, and for the best Gaudí-inspired souvenirs, the excellent gift shop at the Sagrada Familia basilica.
3
In Barcelona, the currency is the euro. You won’t have any trouble finding ATMs throughout the city. Exchange offices are typically open for later hours than banks, but you will receive a better exchange rate at most banks. There’s not a big tipping culture here, but 5% to 10% is a suitable token for good service in a restaurant. Round up the bill for taxis if paying in cash. There’s no need to tip bartenders.

Day at Sea Highlights

Lanzarote, Canary Islands

With beachy landscapes and more than 300 volcanoes, plus perfect weather all year round, you'll quickly see why Lanzarote is an award-winning destination. A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, its stark lava fields were born from violent eruptions as recent as the 19th century. The island's dedication to the environment and tourism has even resulted in recognition from the World Tourism Organization as a universal model of sustainable development. In addition, the island has gone to considerable lengths to preserve its own history, culture and heritage. Lanzarote is known as a haven for modern art. Many of the island’s natural wonders have been preserved through the work of local artist and environmental hero, César Manrique who so still credited for saving his home from overdevelopment. The island has grown into a thriving culinary destination. From fine restaurants to charming seaside bistros, there are a wealth of dining options to explore on your Lanzarote cruise. Traditional Spanish fare is quite popular with lots of fresh seafood and the Canary wines are a must try. Check out the local markets for handcrafted souvenirs and keepsakes. Whether exploring the world’s longest volcanic tunnel; sipping cocktails by a volcanic lake; touring an art museum; or lounging by the sea in the middle of a lunar landscape, it’s an eye-opening adventure.
Travel Tips
1
Lanzarote has an efficient bus network, but the best way to explore the island, if you’re not on a shore excursion, is to rent a car. The island is only 37 miles long by 16 miles wide, so you can cover a lot of ground in a day. Taxis are also plentiful, but there are no ride-hailing apps here. If you ask a taxi driver to drop you at a beach, it’s a good idea to have a plan to get back to the port, too.
2
Souvenirs to look out for in Lanzarote include mojo picón, the famous spicy sauce that accompanies papas arrugadas, Majorero cheese, typically made from goat’s milk, and wines from La Geria region. For beauty products, don’t miss items made from aloe vera, which grows all over the island. Aloe vera gel makes for an especially soothing after-sun product if you’ve overdone your exposure. You’ll find ceramics, basketry, woven hats, and jewelry made from lava stones and olivine, too. There are souvenir shops and artisan stores in all the main tourist areas, including Arrecife, Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca, and Costa Tegu\se.
3
The currency in Lanzarote, which is part of Spain, is the euro. Most establishments on Lanzarote take cards, but if you want cash for very small purchases like ice creams and fruit from markets, there are plentiful ATMs in Arrecife and in the coastal towns. This is not a big tipping culture; round up the bill in a taxi, and for good service in a restaurant, leave 10 percent. If the bill says that service is included, there is no need to tip any extra.

Tenerife, Canary Islands

Beyond its steep and rugged coastline, Tenerife is a cultural and natural wonder waiting to be explored. Discover mysterious step pyramids at Güímar, meet the world’s largest collection of parrots at Loro Park, or take in a show at the ultra-modern Tenerife Auditorium. Foodies will have fun sampling the fresh fish, famous cheeses and sumptuous wines of the island.Of the 7 islands that comprise the Canary Island archipelago, Tenerife stands out as the largest. Depending on your mood and what you are looking to get out of your Tenerife cruise, there are things to consider. For one, the island offers a vastly different terrain depending on where you go. The northern part of the island is quite verdant, so expect the climate to include more rain. In the south, you’ll find it much more arid and dry emulating more of a desert climate. If you like the idea of mingling within crowds and are drawn to where the action is, make plans to visit Los Cristianos, Playa de la Americas, and Costa Adeje in the southwest and Puerto de la Cruz in the north. While in Los Cristianos and you’re looking for some thrills, visit Siam Park, a giant theme park with plenty of rides to choose from. Also in Los Cristianos is Jungle Park, the island’s zoo with over 500 animals in a wonderfully rendered wild setting with lagoons, walkways and sub-tropical foliage.
Travel Tips
1
Tenerife has an impressive public transportation network, and you can reach quite a few places independently from the port in Santa Cruz. The best beach in the area, the long, golden Playa de las Teresitas, is a short bus journey away, while Tram Line 1 takes you to enchanting La Laguna, the former capital of the island, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Car rental is available near the port gates, should you wish to explore independently.
2
There are plenty of authentic souvenirs to look for in Tenerife beyond the usual fridge magnets. Pick up a beautiful manta esperancera, a colorful woolen shawl, or a piece of delicate calado embroidery. You’ll find beauty and after-sun products made from locally grown aloe vera, as well as decorated pottery and ceramics. Edible souvenirs include smoked or cured cheese, jars of spicy red or green mojo, ready-made bienmesabe paste, and delicious island honey, which has its own designation of origin. The best place to buy these is the city’s Nuestra Señora de Africa gourmet market, packed with mouthwatering displays of island produce.
3
The currency in Tenerife, which is part of Spain, is the euro. You will find ATMs in all the major towns, and most vendors will accept cards. Tenerife does not have a big tipping culture; in a restaurant, 5-10% of the bill is appreciated for good service, while you can round up the fare in a taxi. It’s not necessary to tip bartenders.

Gran Canaria, Canary Islands

The extreme and varied micro-climates and vegetation you experience are what have earned this lovely island the nickname, “The Small Continent.” From the rugged coastline to the stretches of lovely sand beach, a variety of natural wonders impossibly fit onto this single island. Eco-enthusiasts are drawn to Gran Canaria for its hiking, horseback riding, and watersports. Spend a day in the Agaete valley where you can visit a local farm for a taste of the island wines, cheese, and cakes. On your cruise to Gran Canaria you’ll also find the capital city of Las Palmas to be a cosmopolitan and cultural center of the Canaries. Stroll down the bustling shopping streets, tour a museum or two; sip a cocktail at a trendy nightclub while exploring this sultry city. The local cuisine is an eclectic combination of Spanish, African, and South American influences and fresh seafood is always on the menu.Soak up the sun and the views of the tropical landscape. The rich, rich green forests of the Canary Islands sweep across from north to south and the rolling dunes of the island desert stretch to the horizon.
Travel Tips
1
The island is compact with an efficient bus network, so it is easy to explore. You could rent a car and drive to the south and back in a day, but do make sure the tank is full, as there are few gas stations in the mountainous interior. Taxis wait outside the port, and there’s a hop-on, hop-off bus service if you want to limit your exploration to Las Palmas.
2
There’s plenty of island produce that makes for a great souvenir. You could stock up on local cheeses, jars of spicy mojo sauce, boxed strelitzia flowers, and island-produced rum. Coffee, honey, and Canary Islands wines also make good gifts—and aloe vera creams and gels are invaluable as natural beauty products. Pottery, ceramics, and local jewelry are more lasting buys, as are handmade Canarian knives, but be sure to pack these in your checked luggage and not your carry-on.
3
The currency in Gran Canaria, which is part of Spain, is the euro. ATMs are available in Las Palmas and the major beach towns. Most establishments will accept cards, but having a few euros in cash is ideal for small purchases. In terms of tipping, it’s standard to round up a taxi bill and leave around 10 percent in a restaurant for good service, provided the bill doesn’t already say “servicio incluido.”

Day at Sea Highlights

Funchal (Madeira), Portugal

Funchal, the largest city on Madeira island, is known as the "Floating Garden" because of its remarkable variety of vegetation, fruit, and flowers. With cruise Madeira everywhere you look you'll find sprawling scenic splendor, from the deeply gouged cliffs to the lush, verdant valleys reminiscent of parts of Hawaii.
Travel Tips
1
When you cruise Madeira, you’ll find that transportation on the island is limited, so you’re better off booking excursions with transportation included, walking to activities close to the port, or riding the bus. Taxis frequent the cruise port, and some visitors choose to explore the island with a rental car.
2
The Mercado dos Lavradores and the Livraria Esperança are two popular shops that sell locally made embroidery, handmade goods, and secondhand books, so you can find a good read to devour on your next beach day or on the deck of the cruise ship. You’ll find souvenir stands and knick knacks for sale near the cruise port in Funchal. Don’t forget to seek out a bottle of Portuguese wine while you’re here.
3
You’ll use the euro while in port on a Madeira cruise. You can find ATMs throughout the island. In general, tipping in Portugal isn’t the norm. Don’t worry about leaving a tip at a restaurant or for your taxi driver when traveling to Madeira.

Day at Sea Highlights

Tangier, Morocco

From tea and spice markets to Moroccan haute cuisine, caves, museums, and preserved fortresses from centuries past, Tangiers has a great deal to offer. A cruise to Tangier is a great way to discover a cultural history unique to Morocco and much of the region. It’s a place where 20th-century artists once flocked to in droves to create some of their most iconic works. This majestic city is known as “The Door of Africa”, and the beating heart connecting two worlds. This is a can’t-miss destination, and one that will show you its bustling, cultural, and cosmopolitan sides all in one stop.
Travel Tips
1
Though public transportation is abundant in the form of buses, traveling by foot, private shuttle, or licensed taxi is best. Tangier can get crowded with visitors, particularly in the Medina and other central areas. This means walking is often the quickest way to get around. Private shuttles and licensed taxis are air-conditioned for comfort, and many services come with English-speaking drivers, too. Always negotiate a price before setting off.
2
For the best shopping in Tangier, you don’t have to go far. Head to the Fondouk Chejra weavers’ market for authentic hand-made woven rugs, robes, scarves, and clothes. Browse exquisite antiques at the Galerie Tindouf, and while there, head for some more local fare at the Tindouf Bazar next door. You will also find lots of great authentic souvenirs at small shops spread all over the Medina during your cruise to Tangier.
3
The local currency in Morocco is the dirham. There are ATMs in the city, but many are unavailable after banks close for the day. You can withdraw cash at the ATM located adjacent to the cruise terminal, or exchange currency once inside the old city walls. Cards are accepted in many places, as are Euros, but many smaller vendors prefer cash, so bring plenty with you on these cruises to Tangier. Tipping is common, but usually done by rounding up in small amounts, or leaving 5-10% for good service at a restaurant or following a tour.
