For drama and beauty, few places in the world match the breathtaking splendor of Alaska. For one, there are glaciers—100,000—some bigger than states. Alaska’s wild coastal plains, towering snow-capped mountains, and glacier-rimmed fjords have a way of making you feel worlds away from home.

Wildlife

Ample land and pristine environmental conditions make Alaska well known for its abundant wildlife. While on an Alaska cruise or Cruisetour, make sure to try and spot the “Big 5” of Alaskan land mammals – bear, moose (the state animal), caribou, wolf, and Dall sheep. You’ll see plentiful bald eagles, colorful puffins, humpback whales, orcas, and reindeer in their natural habitat, as well, so make sure you bring a pair of binoculars and a good camera.

History

Well before it became our 49th state in 1959, the region belonged to Russia. A deal was made by U.S. Secretary of State, William Seward, in 1867 for $7.2 million, or about two cents an acre. People called it Seward’s Folly because they thought the land was useless. Little did they know that in 1880 gold would be discovered in Juneau and in 1902 oil would be discovered and mined in Cordova.

Hubbard Glacier

Named after Gardiner Hubbard, the founder of National Geographic, Hubbard Glacier is the longest tidewater glacier in the world (76 miles long and as tall as a 30-story building). Calving occurs on a daily basis here, so you’ll get to watch and hear as massive chunks of ice fall from the glacier.

Denali National Park

Denali National Park encompasses 6 million acres with the 20,310-ft.-high Denali (formally known as Mount McKinley), North America’s tallest peak, at the center. With terrain of tundra, spruce forest and glaciers, the park is home to wildlife including grizzly bears, wolves, moose, caribou and Dall sheep. It’s a great place to see Alaska’s Big 5. Culinary

While Italy has its beautiful eggplant parmigiana, and Thailand has amazing khao soi, Alaska can also stand proud in its culinary offerings. This region is known for the abundance of fresh seafood—salmon, crab legs (King and Dungeness), black cod, halibut, reindeer and elk sausage, moose, caribou, and a wide range of berries turned into exquisite desserts. There are many options that are unique to the area.

Salmon

Alaska is famous for its fresh caught salmon and there is no shortage of ways they prepare it. The fresh waters bring about a range of salmon from sockeye, to coho, to king (Alaska’s state fish). As a matter of fact, Ketchikan is the salmon capital of the entire world.

Berries

Alaska is known for its own kind of berries from salmonberries, mossberries, blueberries, lingonberries and so many more that are picked in the wild and eaten fresh or in delectable desserts. Or, try the native Akutaq ice cream, a blend of seal oil, reindeer fat, snow, and wild Alaskan berries.

Craft Beer

Alaska has over 30 breweries that produce a wide range of beers in different styles. There’s Alaskan Brewing Co. with Alaskan Amber and Hopothermia. Anchorage Brewing Co. with Crazy Ray’s IPA and Darkest Hour imperial stout. Haines Brewing Co. pours Captain Cook’s Spruce Tip Ale and more. The variety is endless.

Helpful Tips Before You Go
 

  • Be aware of the unusual length of days and nights in these northern latitudes. In May or June, the sun doesn’t “set” until after 11pm giving you more time to see more of Alaska.

  • In Alaska, some of the best tasting water comes right out of the tap. That’s because it’s glacial water—crisp, clean and clear.

  • Much of Alaska is covered by a rainforest, so pack water-resistant clothing.

  • Temperatures can vary based on what you are doing (glacier hiking, going to the top of the mountain, wandering town, etc.). Wearing layers can help keep you comfortable throughout the day no matter what the activity.

  • Book Flights by Celebrity® to be protected in case there is any cancellation.

  • Research the shore excursions and book them in advance, pre-cruise. The popular shore excursions get sold out fast.
