Q: What would you say is the biggest change made since Celebrity Edge launched in December of last year?
A. I don’t think there’s one major change. What we’ve been doing for the last four months is making little tweaks based on feedback we’ve been hearing. It’s those little tweaks that have helped improve the ship and the guest experience. Whether it’s frosting the bifold doors (in the Infinite Verandas), to looking at adding coffee tables to the Sky Suites, to making changes to our entertainment program, everything is open for consideration. You plan and plan and plan, but a first to series ship doesn’t come to life until you have 3,000 guests experiencing it, until you have 1,300 crew members working on the ship, then you see it come to life.
Q. Does Celebrity intend to install wind screens for the Magic Carpet and Roof Top Garden on Celebrity Edge?
A. As we were building the ship, we did a lot of wind studies, (I don’t do those, but we had a lot of engineers do that) and sometimes we judged the wind right and sometimes there’s other winds that come at us. We are looking at adding more protection for the wind on the Rooftop Garden for Celebrity Edge, as well as some sun protection. On Magic Carpet, we are looking to add some more wind protection on Celebrity Apex.
Q. Where did the idea for the Infinite Veranda come from?
A. We’ve been working on this idea for many, many years. The idea came from guest feedback and analysis we’ve done that said that on a typical cruise ship, a guest will use their veranda only about 20% of the time. There’s only so much footprint on a ship and when designing Edge, we thought how can we maximize every inch of the ship. If most guests were using the veranda only 20% of the time, then that becomes wasted space, and that’s where the idea for the Infinite Veranda came from. It allows for the stateroom to become bigger, hold a king size bed, and offer larger bathrooms with more storage.
Q. I’m curious if Celebrity is considering making the folding doors in the Infinite Veranda airtight to allow the AC to stay on?
A. That is happening. The bifold doors, when closed all the way, allow the air conditioning to stay on.
Q. What about putting black-out curtains on the folding doors of the Infinite Veranda to allow access to the veranda in the early morning without the risk of waking up your partner?
A. You don’t want to have too many curtains as they interrupt the airy openness of the space. What we are doing is testing frosting of the bifold doors, so that when you do close them it provides a little more privacy.
Q. What entertainment changes have you made on Celebrity Edge?
A. We have introduced new shows and tweaked others. We recently added Colors of Life to our theater, which features a man trapped in a black-and-white world until a mysterious muse helps him discover a more colorful way to look at life. In The Club, we now have Undercover, which offers a tantalizing exhibition of opulence and hedonism, and Mirage, a breathtaking aerial and circus-style experience. We've also added more Celebrity Life activities throughout the ship.
Q. Why are Captain’s Club benefits different on Celebrity Edge?
A. All our awesome member events, such as the Welcome Party, Senior Officers’ Party, and Wine Tasting will continue on Celebrity Edge, but we’ve made some enhancements. Firstly, the Captain’s Club Welcome Party will take place on embarkation day in Eden, so you’re the first to experience this truly unique venue. Also, given that our theatre is one of the most technically advanced at sea, we adjusted the backstage tour programming to give you a theatre technology experience. Due to The Spa’s unique design, space is limited. Therefore, Elite complimentary day passes are not available for the Thermal Suite. However, we’ve changed the loyalty discount from one-day use to multi-use on Edge, so you can try out a variety of different spa experiences and services throughout your cruise.
