Happy 30th to Us

This month marks Celebrity Cruises' 30th birthday—and even though we’re not sailing, we’re still celebrating this event in a big way.

These last 30 years have been truly amazing—and we’re feeling a bit nostalgic. Here are some fun facts about 1990—the year Celebrity Cruises first set sail:

  • George H.W. Bush was President of the United States.
  • Gas was $1.15 per gallon and a dozen eggs cost $1.00.
  • People gave two thumbs up to Julia Roberts and Richard Gere in Pretty Woman.
  • Sinead O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares to You” and Madonna’s “Vogue” topped the music charts.
  • Cheers, 60 Minutes, and Roseanne were prime time favorites—and The Simpsons premiered on FOX for the first time.
     

There were many monumental world events in 1990—and here are a few we remember:

  • Nelson Mandela was released from prison in South Africa after being in prison for 27 years.
  • NASA’s STS-31 mission deployed the Hubble Space Telescope.
  • Tim Berners-Lee published his formal proposal for the World Wide Web—and the first web page was written.

In 1990, the Celebrity Cruises team was making history of our own—with some very timely hairstyles and fashion choices. Some of us were embarking on our careers while others of us were tending to our studies. Here’s a glimpse into the life of our Celebrity Cruises team 30 years ago:

In 1990, President & CEO, Lisa Lutoff-Perlo was working at Royal Headquarters in Florida as the Director of Incentive Sales for Royal Caribbean
Brian Abel, Senior Vice President of Hotel Operations, was getting ready to graduate high school in Rockland County, New York.
Chief Marketing Officer, Peter Giorgi was a 10th grader at Father Leo J Austin Catholic Secondary School in Whitby, Ontario.
Dondra Ritzenthaler, Senior Vice President of Sales, was a junior in high school in Palestine, Texas.
Vice President and Managing Director of EMEA, Jo Rzymowska, was living in Paris, France, working for Thomas Cook Group as a Corporate European Sales Manager.
Vice President of Finance & Strategy, Elizabeth Oates, was an adorable kindergartener in Coral Gables, Florida.
Susan Bonner, Vice President and Managing Director, Australia, NZ & Asia Pacific, had recently graduated from Tulane University in New Orleans and was living in New York City.
Vice President of Global Revenue Management, Julie Shiell, was getting ready for the 8th grade in Aurora, Colorado.
And Andrea Shey, Director of Loyalty, was a very rambunctious second grader in North Miami Beach at Highland Oaks Elementary.

Married at Sea

COVID-19 has affected us all in different ways. That’s certainly true for Venita and Rajiv, two crew members who had to cancel their wedding ceremony due to the pandemic. Turning a disappointing situation into a joyous one, Captain Kate officiated their ceremony on board Celebrity Edge with a little help from her cat, Bug Naked as the ring bearer. Venita, who works in Guest Relations, and Rajiv, who works in the Photo Department, met six years ago at their university and said it was love at first sight. Fun fact: Venita’s father also works for the company as an onboard chef —making this story a true Celebrity family affair.
