Depending on your sailing, your ship may dock at St. Johann, Dreiländereck, or Klybeck. For travelers planning a smooth embarkation, the most important details to know are where your ship is docking, how far the port is from the city center, and the best way to get there from the airport, train station, or hotel.

Basel is known as Switzerland’s cultural capital, tucked in the northwest corner on the banks of the Rhine River near the borders of France and Germany. Basel is one of Europe’s most important Rhine River cruise hubs. The city sits near the borders of Switzerland, France, and Germany, which makes it a convenient embarkation point for regional river itineraries. To accommodate the variety of vessels starting or ending their river cruise from Basel, there are three different docking areas.

Celebrity River Cruises currently uses St. Johann Passagierbootterminal, the German term for passenger boat terminal, but docking locations can vary. This docking terminal is the most convenient, close to the heart of Basel’s city center. River ships also use Dreiländereck and Klybeck docking areas, depending on the cruise line and itinerary. With no central terminal in this delightful Rhine River destination, travelers sailing from Basel River Cruise Port should always confirm their exact docking point in their pre-cruise documents.

Basel has three main docking locations, and knowing which one applies to your sailing makes arrival straightforward.

St. Johann: The most central pier and the one Celebrity currently uses for most sailings. It sits just a short walk from the historic Old Town and St. Johann’s Gate, making it the most convenient option for guests exploring the city independently.

  • St. Johann terminal address: St. Johanns-Rheinweg 109, 4056 Basel

Dreiländereck: Located further downstream at the famous Three-Country Corner, where the borders of Switzerland, Germany, and France meet. Roughly twice the distance from Old Town, but typically just 15 minutes by car.

  • Dreiländereck terminal address: Westquaistrasse 39 and 75, 4057 Basel

Klybeck: Situated in the industrial docklands downstream from the city center, on the same side of the river as Dreiländereck and a similar distance from Old Town.

  • Klybeck terminal address: Uferstrasse 1 and 80, 4057 Basel

  • Reach St. Johann in 13 minutes by taxi, private shuttle, or rideshare. Traveling by public transportation takes 23 minutes with a 15-minute walk after four stops on the BVB 50 Bus. Transfer to cut the walk to nine minutes on Bus 50/Tram 1 or Bus 50/Bus 36.

Where To Explore From Your Basel Rhine River Cruise

Basel River Cruise Port is far more than a fly-in foundation for a journey down the Rhine. There are myriad things to do in Basel, from 40+ museums on every imaginable topic to live music, theatre, and a strong art world presence. The original Art Basel was born here, creating a hub for collectors of high-end modern art over 32 years before the sister festival, Art Basel Miami Beach.

Slip into the rhythm of this riverside charmer for a slow Swiss preamble to your sail from docks at St. Johann, Dreiländereck, or Klybeck. If time is tight, simply while away a day admiring architecture and historic clock towers—they’ll pique your curiosity about what makes this town tick.

The City of Basel

If you have an inquisitive mind, dive deeper using the annual PASS Musees, which grants admission into 345 museums for one nominal fee. If you just want a taste, the Basel Card presented to all overnight guests in the city includes free or discounted admission into several local museums.

As the stars come out, so do the wine bars, boutique shops, a sprinkling of EDM clubs, and cozy pubs. Stay at the Art House Hotel, perfectly placed in the Steinenvorstadt district just steps from a number of top museums. If you prefer to eat, drink, and be merry as you lay your head where cultural giants once lingered, Hotel Marthof was a favored haunt for Picasso, Joyce, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Oscar Wilde.

Old Town

Basel’s medieval Old Town is a wagon-wheel array of winding cobblestoned streets surrounding the Marktplatz. Locally inspired cuisine is elevated by fresh farm goods from neighboring countries. Sip a cafe and nibble a Basler Leckerli in the shadows of the 16th-century red-sandstone Rathaus or 12th-century cathedral. I find the traditional hard, chewy gingerbread biscuit, dating back to the Middle Ages, goes rather well with a dollop of Gothic drama.

Der Teufelhof Basel, a hotel in the heart of Old Town, revels in culture with revolving art exhibits and an onsite live theatre. If timeless with a twist is your type, Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois caters to the culinary-minded with the formal Cheval Blanc, boasting three Michelin stars, as well as a traditional French brasserie, both with riverside views from the 300-year-old hotel’s terraces.

Stops Along the Rhine

Rhine itineraries stop in ports exuding an incredible sense of place.

Amsterdam is a captivating destination with tulip-and-bike-lined canals, narrow alleys with pubs as bustling as its street markets, and haunting historical touchpoints felt in Anne Frank’s house or while admiring the masters’ visions of everyday Dutch life at the Rijksmuseum. 17th-century spires tower over narrow alleys that invite exploration. Once I tried a freshly made stroopwafel, the only way to relive the moment at home was to use the local trick of placing the treat over your mug to keep both the coffee or tea piping hot while melting the inner caramel into warm, gooey goodness.

Cologne creates a vision of variety along the romantic Rhine. Overlook the 2,000-year-old city of canals and bridges laden with “love locks” from the top of the Gothic Cologne Cathedral’s 500 spiral steps. Refresh with a cold Kölsch at a lively Brauhaus (personal tip—if you don’t top your empty stangen with a coaster, they will keep coming) or revitalize those aching quads at serene Claudius Therme, with Jacuzzis, thermal spa, saunas, and relaxation wellness rooms.

Strasbourg’s stories told in 691 elements of street art meld modern with medieval. Explore Grande Île, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the half-timbered houses of Petite France, with postcard-perfect flower-covered balconies and intricate wooden carvings.

Take a Basel-region excursion into fairy-tale Alsace villages and pay homage to the vines that deliver the region’s famous varietals. Black Forest is another popular jaunt, just an hour away. Trek up Germany’s highest waterfalls or tuck into an authentic slice of Black Forest cake.
