Singapore, Singapore

At first glance, this diamond-shaped island just off the coast of Malaysia gleams with modernism and commercialism, making it seem more Western than Eastern. But as you continue to discover the city-state, you'll uncover the eclectic mix of cultures, religions, ancient treasures and British colonial impressions that give rise to a unique Singaporean identity. The cultural fusion is perhaps best expressed in Singapore's unofficial language, Singlish, a unique patois of English, Chinese and Malay.
Travel Tips
1
Singapore’s Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system is comprehensive and easy to navigate, not to mention efficient, safe, and clean. Hop off at the Marina South Pier station, just a short walk from the Marina Bay Cruise Centre, after spending time in downtown Singapore and the city’s main sights. Taxis are common in Singapore, but only stop at designated stands to drop you off once you’re in the city to curb traffic. Singapore doesn’t host services like Uber or Lyft; the local ride-hailing service is called Grab. The city’s trishaws are mostly a tourist activity now, so be careful not to pay too much for one.
2
Find luxury brands and well-known names when you’re shopping at the Marina Bay Sands Mall, which is just a short 15-minute ride from the cruise center, particularly if you’re interested in high fashion and Singaporean designers. Singapore’s Chinatown is also a must-see for its energy, with plenty of independent shops, cool boutiques, and hawker food centers where you can refuel. For the most high-end shopping, head to Orchard Road, lined with air-conditioned malls and designer labels.
3
The official currency of Singapore is the Singaporean dollar (S$). Tipping isn’t common practice in Singapore, and credit cards are considered the norm here. You can find currency exchange at banks and conveniently at the cruise port, called the Marina Bay Cruise Centre Singapore.

Day at Sea Highlights

Phuoc An, Vietnam

Located on the edge of the Mekong Delta, this dynamic metropolis also features the ageless beauty of an ancient culture. French colonial architecture mixes with modern Asian influences, providing a diverse backdrop for the many motorbikes, scooters, pagodas, and street markets. Stroll the wide boulevards of this city, formerly known as Saigon, and visit The History Museum, which houses artifacts from two thousand years of Vietnamese history.

Day at Sea Highlights

Hue/Danang (Chan May), Vietnam

The Nguyen Dynasty founded this former capital in the 17th century on the banks of the Perfume River. Today it sits as a massive open-air museum of temples, pagodas, palaces and tombs. Explore the Imperial Citadel, then take a river cruise for a view of the Tombs of the Emperors and Thien Mu Pagoda. Pago Pago is the main settlement on Tutuila, surrounded by peaks rising out of deep water harbor rimmed with palm-shaded beaches.
Travel Tips
1
There are limited transportation options from the port of Chan May. The best ways to get around are to book private transportation or take one of the local taxis into the city from the Da Nang cruise port. From the Chan May port, it’ll take about an hour to get into Da Nang. Car rentals are also an option for travelers during a stop in Da Nang. When you book a shore excursion, transportation comes included.
2
There’s not much at the cruise terminal itself in the way of shopping, but once you head into Da Nang, bargains await along Le Loi Street. Riverside Market in Hoi An is popular with locals. Some of the best silk in the area is sold here, like at the Hoi An Silk Village, where you can tour a silk manufacturing plant. Open-air markets and a walkable set of storefronts in Hoi An make it an easy, relaxed day of shopping.
3
Use the official currency of Vietnam, the dong, or VND, while you’re traveling in the country. Cash is preferred when you’re making purchases in Da Nang, but sometimes American Express, MasterCard, and Visa are accepted at bigger establishments and restaurants. When you’re at a restaurant, there’s already a service charge included in the total bill. Taxi drivers don’t expect a tip either, but you can leave an additional VND if you’d like.

Day at Sea Highlights

Hong Kong, China

Neon signs galore, dim sum, and amazing temples are a few of the favorite experiences in Hong Kong. Take in as much as you can of this thrilling city with its endless shopping and towering skyscrapers. Your agenda for Hong Kong should include Victoria Peak, an Aberdeen Fishing Village, the Man Mo Temple and Sheung Wan Dried Food and Herbal Market. Be certain to have extra room in your suitcase for the bargains you are bound to discover.
Travel Tips
1
The MTR, or Mass Transit Railway, is lauded as one of the most efficient and clean underground railway systems in the world. The MTR is one of the quickest ways to get around the city. Taxis are abundant, too, and fairly cheap for getting from point A to point B. There are also free shuttle buses from the cruise port to various shopping areas in the city, each located near a central MTR station. Ferries are used to reach the Outlying Islands just beyond the city.
2
There are some shops within the terminal for picking up quick gifts and souvenirs before you sail. But this is Hong Kong, a city dedicated to retail. If you’re looking for a shopping experience accompanied by flashing neon signs and the chaos of the city all around you, Causeway Bay is a popular shopping district. Yau Ma Tei Wholesale Fruit Market is a spot for fresh, wholesale fruits and vegetables. For boutique shopping and malls, head over to the Central District, where more upscale brands have shops in Hong Kong.
3
The Hong Kong Dollar (HK$) is the official currency, and you’ll get a better exchange rate if you don’t exchange currency at the airport or a hotel. Credit cards like Visa, AmEx, and MasterCard are widely accepted in Hong Kong. Tipping is expected at hotels, but it’s not common to tip anywhere else in China, such as in bars or restaurants. Don’t leave a tip after a taxi ride, either, unless you have extra change and want to be polite. Enthusiastic haggling is fair game in Hong Kong, particularly at local markets and stalls.

Day at Sea Highlights

Taipei(Keelung), Taiwan

Taipei, Taiwan: This culturally diverse and commercially influential city has been shaped by its fierce sense of independence vying with undeniable ties to mainland China. The result is a fascinating blend of culture, art, history and social diversity. As you explore through the city on your Taipei cruise, you’ll fall in love with the futuristic cityscape and dazzling arcitecture. Dotted with tranquil parks and green spaces, you’ll find locals practicing the art of Tai Chi. Cuisine plays a central role in Taiwanese culture with culinary traditions from regions throughout China, including Fujian, Shanghai, Sichuan, and Hunan found around the city. Be sure to visit a relaxing tea house, or sample some famous Taiwanese snacks at a lively night market. Browse high-end boutiques in the Zhongxiao-Dunhao area and explore the dozens of fashionable malls in Xinyi District for keepsakes and souvenirs.
Travel Tips
1
From the port, you can take a train or bus to get into Taipei, and the MRT metro system is comprehensive and easy to navigate. You can hop on a train at Keelung station from nearby the port that will take you to the center of Taipei. Most attractions in Taipei are accessible within a 20-minute walk of each other. Of course, yellow taxis are abundant in Taipei, but most drivers will speak Chinese and very little English, so come prepared with a map or the name of your destination written down to make the navigation process easy for both parties.
2
Taipei is famous not only for markets and stalls but enormous shopping malls scattered throughout the city. The Night Market in Taipei is one of the most popular with locals and tourists alike, where the smells of grilled foods wafts through the air and crowds gather to eat, stroll, and buy. Hinduism has clearly influenced many of the shapes and structures that local artisans create and sell in the markets here. Bring home organic tea or handmade wooden sculptures as souvenirs.
3
The official currency of Taipei is the New Taiwan dollar (TWD), and you won’t have luck trying to use euros or U.S dollars during your time in Taiwan. ATMs are common all over the city and at banks, and you’ll find credit cards are widely accepted in Taipei, too, but it’s a good to keep cash on hand for small transactions and local markets. Tipping isn’t customary, but it’s polite to tip 10% to tour guides, waitstaff, and bartenders. Tipping your taxi driver isn’t necessary, but it’s kind to round up to the nearest dollar.

Day at Sea Highlights

Nagasaki, Japan

Historically rich Nagasaki features beautiful seaside scenery and fabulous nighttime views from its mountain slopes. Secluded hot springs, fascinating museums, and ornate temples live side by side in this exciting city. Ten natural parks grace the area, and unique festivals can be experienced throughout the year. Walk through streets influenced by both Chinese and European cultures in fascinating Nagasaki.
Travel Tips
1
Use the local tram to get around the city. Nagasaki also has quaint street cars and an extensive bus system, though the bus is frequented mostly by locals and those who can understand Japanese. Both are walking distance from the port. Of course, taxis are available near the cruise port as well, and most are metered. Just be sure to show your driver your destination on a map or write it down.
2
The closest shopping to the port on a cruise to Nagasaki, Japan is the Hamanomachi Shopping Arcade, which offers a range of low-cost items as well as boutiques and other general stores. It’s not upscale, but it’s a good way to glimpse daily life in Nagasaki. Of course, you can also head into the city to enjoy Nagasaki’s massive Chinatown, too.
3
The official currency of Japan is the yen, and you’ll find you’ll need cash while you’re exploring Japan. Credit cards are becoming more widely accepted, but it’s more common to pay with cash while on a Nagasaki, Japan cruise. Tipping isn’t the norm in Japanese culture, so you don’t have to tip your taxi driver or server at dinner.

Day at Sea Highlights

Mt Fuji (Shimizu), Japan

On clear days, particularly in winter, Mount Fuji (Fuji-san in Japanese) is visible from as far as Tokyo, 60 miles away. When Japan's highest mountain is capped with snow, it's a picture-postcard perfect volcanic cone. One of the best-known symbols of Japan, this iconic mountain has been considered sacred since ancient times and was even forbidden to women until the early 1900s.
Travel Tips
1
Buses and ferries travel regular routes from the Port of Shimizu to the center of town. Because you’ll be docking at the port instead of in the town of Fuji, it may take an hour-and-a-half car ride to reach the summit of the mountain. Be sure to leave plenty of time to get around, as Mount Fuji is one of the most popular attractions in the area. Taxis are available too, but aren’t as common in the Shimizu area as they are in other parts of Japan.
2
The best area for shopping is a short five-minute walk from the Shimizu port, where you can eat a snack, buy souvenirs, and shop for handmade Japanese goods. There’s even a museum dedicated to sushi at the Suruga Souvenir Shopping Area. Shop a bit before continuing on to Mount Fuji.
3
Tipping isn’t a must in Japan. In fact, some people in Japan find the practice of tipping abnormal, so broach the topic carefully. In general, you don’t have to tip your taxi driver or your waitstaff. Tipping a tour guide is up to you, but handing the guide money directly is a no-no. Use cash while in Japan instead of credit cards. Many smaller establishments don’t accept credit cards, so carry a little extra yen to cover your day-to-day costs.
