Hong Kong, China

Neon signs galore, dim sum, and amazing temples are a few of the favorite experiences in Hong Kong. Take in as much as you can of this thrilling city with its endless shopping and towering skyscrapers. Your agenda for Hong Kong should include Victoria Peak, an Aberdeen Fishing Village, the Man Mo Temple and Sheung Wan Dried Food and Herbal Market. Be certain to have extra room in your suitcase for the bargains you are bound to discover.
Travel Tips
1
The MTR, or Mass Transit Railway, is lauded as one of the most efficient and clean underground railway systems in the world. The MTR is one of the quickest ways to get around the city. Taxis are abundant, too, and fairly cheap for getting from point A to point B. There are also free shuttle buses from the cruise port to various shopping areas in the city, each located near a central MTR station. Ferries are used to reach the Outlying Islands just beyond the city.
2
There are some shops within the terminal for picking up quick gifts and souvenirs before you sail. But this is Hong Kong, a city dedicated to retail. If you’re looking for a shopping experience accompanied by flashing neon signs and the chaos of the city all around you, Causeway Bay is a popular shopping district. Yau Ma Tei Wholesale Fruit Market is a spot for fresh, wholesale fruits and vegetables. For boutique shopping and malls, head over to the Central District, where more upscale brands have shops in Hong Kong.
3
The Hong Kong Dollar (HK$) is the official currency, and you’ll get a better exchange rate if you don’t exchange currency at the airport or a hotel. Credit cards like Visa, AmEx, and MasterCard are widely accepted in Hong Kong. Tipping is expected at hotels, but it’s not common to tip anywhere else in China, such as in bars or restaurants. Don’t leave a tip after a taxi ride, either, unless you have extra change and want to be polite. Enthusiastic haggling is fair game in Hong Kong, particularly at local markets and stalls.

Day at Sea Highlights

Hanoi (Halong Bay), Vietnam

Hanoi (Ha Long Bay), Vietnam: Nothing can prepare you for the beauty of Ha Long Bay and its 2,000 limestone karsts, nor the experience of trekking around mountainous Sapa. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994, this port city with its sweeping lush landscapes and calm waters lies just 100 miles from the bustling streets of Hanoi. Catch a water taxi out to one of the many floating restaurants on the bay.

There’s so much to explore on a Vietnam cruise. Head to Hanoi, the country’s captivating capital, where you’ll find a blend of Parisian grace and Asian pace. Rise early to watch t’ai chi practiced at dawn near Hoan Kiem Lake, then take in the rich heritage and history with a visit to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and the bustling back streets of the Old Quarter. Or embark on an adventure through the Red River Delta. Experience one of the world’s most magnificent natural wonders- Ha Long Bay in the Gulf of Tonkin from the decks of a traditional Chinese junk boat.
Travel Tips
1
Taxis will be waiting for passengers at the cruise port. Uber and the taxi app Grab are in operation in Hanoi as well. Buses to Halong from Hanoi leave every half hour. Motorbike taxis are called xe om in Vietnam, and they’re a great option for solo travelers wanting to experience the city on a motorbike.
2
On a Hanoi cruise, you’ll find that shopping opportunities in Halong Bay area aren’t highly developed yet, but small ships float along the bay selling snacks and sweets. The Bai Chay night market is the place to go for Vietnamese artisanal items and handmade goods, plus plenty of authentic Vietnamese street eats. Don’t forget that bargaining is part of the culture here, so stick to your guns to secure a good deal.
3
In Vietnam, the official currency is the dong, or VND. Tipping isn’t an expected practice in Vietnam, but leaving extra change for a taxi driver is welcome. Tour drivers rely on tip income, so be sure to tip any guide who helps you during your time on a Hanoi cruise. A general practice is to tip waiters and waitresses 5-10% at a restaurant. Bargaining is a central part of the culture in Vietnam, so you’re welcome to practice your haggling at the markets and shops here.

Hue/Danang (Chan May), Vietnam

The Nguyen Dynasty founded this former capital in the 17th century on the banks of the Perfume River. Today it sits as a massive open-air museum of temples, pagodas, palaces and tombs. Explore the Imperial Citadel, then take a river cruise for a view of the Tombs of the Emperors and Thien Mu Pagoda. Pago Pago is the main settlement on Tutuila, surrounded by peaks rising out of deep water harbor rimmed with palm-shaded beaches.
Travel Tips
1
There are limited transportation options from the port of Chan May. The best ways to get around are to book private transportation or take one of the local taxis into the city from the Da Nang cruise port. From the Chan May port, it’ll take about an hour to get into Da Nang. Car rentals are also an option for travelers during a stop in Da Nang. When you book a shore excursion, transportation comes included.
2
There’s not much at the cruise terminal itself in the way of shopping, but once you head into Da Nang, bargains await along Le Loi Street. Riverside Market in Hoi An is popular with locals. Some of the best silk in the area is sold here, like at the Hoi An Silk Village, where you can tour a silk manufacturing plant. Open-air markets and a walkable set of storefronts in Hoi An make it an easy, relaxed day of shopping.
3
Use the official currency of Vietnam, the dong, or VND, while you’re traveling in the country. Cash is preferred when you’re making purchases in Da Nang, but sometimes American Express, MasterCard, and Visa are accepted at bigger establishments and restaurants. When you’re at a restaurant, there’s already a service charge included in the total bill. Taxi drivers don’t expect a tip either, but you can leave an additional VND if you’d like.

Day at Sea Highlights

Ho Chi Minh (Phu My), Vietnam

Located on the edge of the Mekong Delta, this dynamic metropolis also features the ageless beauty of an ancient culture. French colonial architecture mixes with modern Asian influences, providing a diverse backdrop for the many motorbikes, scooters, pagodas, and street markets. Stroll the wide boulevards of this city, formerly known as Saigon, and visit The History Museum, which houses artifacts from two thousand years of Vietnamese history.
Travel Tips
1
Transportation options are limited in Ho Chi Minh City, and the port of Phu My is primarily commercial and used for cargo and trade. As a result, very few taxis travel to the Phu My port area. The best, easiest option for cruisers is to book a shore excursion or private transportation in advance to take you to the heart of Ho Chi Minh City.
2
The markets in Ho Chi Minh City are diverse and a great way to meet and mingle with locals. At the Ben Thanh Market, souvenirs and handmade goods are sold from merchants along with some of the best street food in the city. Before you board the Saigon cruise ship again, check out the intimate, small market near the pier for last-minute finds. Bargaining and haggling is a must in Ho Chi Minh City. For food goods, there’s the supermarket Ba Ria, which you can take a shuttle to get to. It’s a great way to get a feel for what kinds of fresh produce and vegetables are unique to Vietnam.
3
Use the official currency of Vietnam, the dong (VND), while you’re traveling in Vietnam. You’ll want to exchange your currency into VND and carry enough cash for your day-long stop while on a cruise to Ho Chi Minh City. Credit cards aren’t widely accepted in the area except at some higher-end restaurants. Crisp U.S. dollars are sometimes accepted, too. Credit cards that have better luck of being accepted here are American Express, Visa, and MasterCard. Cash to cover a meal, a taxi, or to purchase a souvenir is a must-have. When you’re at a restaurant, a service charge is usually included already, so you don’t have to tip additionally. When you take a taxi, it’s polite to round up to the nearest VND.

Day at Sea Highlights

Bangkok/Laemchabang, Thailand

Bangkok is a city of contradictions: high-rise buildings and popular clubs abound, but so do golden temples and lively street fairs. A visit to the National Museum is great for history buffs, while shoppers will love the bargains in the Banglamphu district. Klong Toey, in central Bangkok, features a highly discounted market, offering fresh eel, dried fish, and the lively smells, sights, and sounds of this waterfront-pier area.
Travel Tips
1
When your Bangkok cruise ship docks in Laem Chabang, your main options for exploring Bangkok are a shuttle service to local malls, taking a taxi, or heading off on a shore excursion. Excursions can be booked as part of Bangkok cruise packages, which take care of your transportation needs. It takes a long car ride, a little less than two hours, to get from the port into Bangkok. Booking transportation into Bangkok before you arrive is recommended because there are a limited number of taxis available.
2
Bangkok has some of the best shopping in Thailand, from the colorful Chatuchak Weekend Market, the largest market in Thailand, to the MBK Center which has over 2,000 stores and restaurants within the complex. The energy and bustle of the markets in Thailand mean even making purchases for snacks, fruits, or vegetables have an undeniable excitement. Harbour Mall is also only a 15-minute taxi ride away from the Laem Chabang cruise port.
3
The official currency of Thailand is the baht, which come in different denominations. For example, there are 1, 5, 10, 20, and 100 baht notes. There are also satang coins, but these are gradually being phased out. U.S. dollars are infrequently accepted while you’re traveling on a cruise to Bangkok. It’s recommended you carry some cash, and plan ahead when exchanging your currency because all ATMs here come with a hefty fee. Tipping isn’t part of the daily life in Thailand, but rounding up to the nearest baht for good service is recommended. Leaving a 10-15% tip in upscale restaurants is very helpful and polite for service industry workers.

Ko Samui, Thailand

This small tropical paradise, lined with coconut palms and white sand beaches and encircled by turquoise water is a perfect place to escape and explore. Gaze up at the Big Buddha, cool off in the natural pool at the base of Na Muang Waterfall and view the astonishing natural rock formations of Hin Ta and Hin Yai.
Travel Tips
1
Taxis are available at the port for visitors. You can visit neighboring islands via one of the ferries that leave from the port. If you want to navigate the island on your own, you can rent a car or motorbike. If you’re heading on a shore excursion, we’ll arrange all of the transportation to and from the port.
2
In Nathon Town, you’ll find supermarkets, pharmacies, and a number of stores and restaurants. At Chaweng Beach, you’ll find plenty of boutique shops selling clothing, jewelry, and other souvenirs.
3
Thailand’s local currency is the Thai baht. Tipping is not common in Koh Samui, but if you’ve had excellent service or a friendly taxi driver, you can always leave a small tip as an extra thank you.

Day at Sea Highlights

Singapore, Singapore

At first glance, this diamond-shaped island just off the coast of Malaysia gleams with modernism and commercialism, making it seem more Western than Eastern. But as you continue to discover the city-state, you'll uncover the eclectic mix of cultures, religions, ancient treasures and British colonial impressions that give rise to a unique Singaporean identity. The cultural fusion is perhaps best expressed in Singapore's unofficial language, Singlish, a unique patois of English, Chinese and Malay.
Travel Tips
1
Singapore’s Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system is comprehensive and easy to navigate, not to mention efficient, safe, and clean. Hop off at the Marina South Pier station, just a short walk from the Marina Bay Cruise Centre, after spending time in downtown Singapore and the city’s main sights. Taxis are common in Singapore, but only stop at designated stands to drop you off once you’re in the city to curb traffic. Singapore doesn’t host services like Uber or Lyft; the local ride-hailing service is called Grab. The city’s trishaws are mostly a tourist activity now, so be careful not to pay too much for one.
2
Find luxury brands and well-known names when you’re shopping at the Marina Bay Sands Mall, which is just a short 15-minute ride from the cruise center, particularly if you’re interested in high fashion and Singaporean designers. Singapore’s Chinatown is also a must-see for its energy, with plenty of independent shops, cool boutiques, and hawker food centers where you can refuel. For the most high-end shopping, head to Orchard Road, lined with air-conditioned malls and designer labels.
3
The official currency of Singapore is the Singaporean dollar (S$). Tipping isn’t common practice in Singapore, and credit cards are considered the norm here. You can find currency exchange at banks and conveniently at the cruise port, called the Marina Bay Cruise Centre Singapore.
