Day at Sea Highlights

Haugesund, Norway

Located between mountains, islands and the North Sea, the beautiful, rugged landscape of Haugesund will take you back to the days when the city was the home of Viking kings and chieftains. Today it’s one of Norway’s principal culture centers, hosting the Norwegian International Film Festival as well as a jazz festival every summer. The fascinating story of the Viking Kings at the heart of the region, a rich cultural scene, plenty of festivals and shopping, vibrant towns and extreme sport activities all go together to provide a rich menu of experiences to choose from.
Travel Tips
1
The Haugesund cruise port is located near the city’s downtown area. You can walk into town or take the free shuttle bus from the port. In the city center, you’ll find a variety of stores and restaurants to explore, while the natural attractions, like Langfoss Waterfall and Folgefonna National Park, are farther away and can only be reached via bus or car.
2
Near the Haugesund cruise port, you’ll be able to walk to the main shopping area of the town, which is concentrated in two streets: Skaregata, where you’ll find designer stores and big-name retailers; and Haraldsgata, a smaller alley with boutique shops selling local items and gifts. There are also two large shopping malls in Haugesund: Oasen, in the south side of the city, and Amanda Shopping Center, the largest mall in the area.
3
The local currency in Haugesund is the Norwegian krone. Credit cards are used widely throughout the city, but you’ll need to present a valid ID when paying with one. Tipping is not common, but if you experienced great service, you can always leave a little something extra to show your appreciation.

Alesund, Norway

Alesund’s turrets, spires, and other whimsical art nouveau architectural touches give the town its distinctive, fairytale-like character. On your cruise to Alesund, don’t forget to visit scenic Geiranger Fjord. One of Norway’s best-known attractions is just a stone’s throw from this quaint little town. Ages of glacial erosion have given way to sculpted, towering mountainsides upon which flow numerous, dramatic waterfalls. There is no shortage of nature to stand in awe of at this favorite Norway attraction. To fully capture the depth of beauty in this seaside town, a jaunt up Mount Aksla is in order. From there, you’ll have a bird’s-eye view of this colorful, magical place. Drive the famous Path of Trolls, a roadway that was literally blasted out of the mountainside. Travel back to Viking days and discover exotic marine life on this exploration of the Saga Islands. Begin on Giske, where you’ll walk in the footsteps of Viking legends then continue to the island of Godoy to visit the Atlantic Sea Park. Built directly into the rugged landscape, it features massive aquariums teeming with colorful fish and sea life.
Travel Tips
1
Once you get into the city center on your Alesund fjord cruise, many attractions are a short 15- to 20-minute walk away. When cruises come through town, there are frequently operating hop-on/hop-off buses to take you to various tourist sights around town. Local taxi operators are available but can be expensive because there are limited taxis available during high volume periods. The local bus system is extensive and how many who live in Alesund get around. There’s a bus station not far from the cruise terminal, which is an easy way to get started in navigating to the center of the city.
2
Because you’re geographically very close to the downtown area when you arrive on your Alesund cruise, it’s easy to snuff out the city’s best shopping. The cobblestoned Kongens Gate Street offers a variety of vintage and antique shopping, plus hand-blown glass goods for sale. You’ll quickly feel at home shopping alongside locals for souvenirs and thrifted treasures to bring back with you. When you need a break, pop into one of the local bakeries or cafes for a treat and a coffee.
3
The official currency of Norway is the krone (kr), and credit cards are widely accepted in Norway. There are plenty of ATMs, called “mini-banks,” scattered around Alesund. Bargaining and haggling isn’t common practice in Norway, so it’s unlikely you can catch a deal on a souvenir or market items. Tipping in Norway isn’t common either, but it’s very polite, especially if you’ve received great service. A service charge is typically already included in your restaurant bill, so there’s no need to tip additionally when you eat out.

Flam, Norway

The town of Flam, Norway is nestled in a tributary of the world's longest and deepest fjord. Surrounded by steep mountainsides, roaring waterfalls, and deep valleys, you’ll experience a one-of-a-kind encounter with nature on your Flam cruise. This quaint Norway town is a place of extremes. The epic majesty of Flam’s dense green mountains dwarfs even the grandest of cruise ships, and the glass-calm water that surrounds the town woos adventurers from near and far. This is place where you can’t help but feel closer to nature for no other reason that it overwhelms at every turn. Climb aboard the Flam Railway for the world’s steepest train ride and rumble 2,800 feet up the wilds of Norway. Kayak through the calm waters of the Aurlandsfjord for breathtaking views of mountain farms with grazing goats or sheep perched at the fjord’s edge. You’ll find many restaurants and cafes offering local Norwegian fare made with farm-fresh ingredients. And you can sample the famous brown and white goat cheese in nearby Undredal. Whether it’s hiking, kayaking, or taking a dizzying train ride into the mountains, Flam is a Norwegian wonderland that’s meant to be explored.
Travel Tips
1
Flam is located off of the E16 highway, which also connects to the major cities of Oslo and Bergen. A car is the usual method to get around Flam and the surrounding region for those not taking the train for a journey. However, be aware that there is only one car rental office in Flam and it books up early. The local bus system has minimal routes, but you will find service to Aurland from Flam. Another fun way to get around town and the surrounding valley is by bike.
2
Traditional Norwegian souvenirs that you can find on a Flam fjord cruise port of call include Norwegian’s signature knitwear, troll figurines, and cheese utensils. Another souvenir to get that is unique to Flam is a pair of shoes from Aurlandskoen, a shop that sells loafer-style shoes made in nearby Aurland. If you take a ride on the train and want a souvenir to remember that trip by, stop in the shop at the Railway Museum.
3
You won’t find the Euro here since Norway is not part of the European Union like its neighbors Denmark and Sweden. Instead, you’ll use Norwegian krone. Flam fjord cruise passengers will find that many local businesses only accept cash, so it’s wise to exchange some money for Norwegian krone before leaving for your trip. If you find yourself needing more cash while in Flam, there’s an ATM only a minute’s walk from the ship at Aurland Sparebank. When dining out, tipping is appreciated, though you’re not expected to tip as much as you may be used to in the U.S. Instead, the customary tip amount in Norway is 6% to 10% of your total bill.

Bergen, Norway

Bergen, Norway is a former Viking stronghold girded by deep fjords, towering mountains and sweeping glaciers. Visit Bryggen Wharf, where you can strike a bargain in one of the many artisans' workshops, or visit the famous Fish Market for a real treat. Bergen specialties include fish soup, cured salmon, herring, shrimp, and venison. Be sure to try the “skillingsbolle”, a sinfully good cinnamon roll while on your Bergen cruise. This city located on the southwest coast of Norway is straight out of storybook. At the center of its allure is the old wharf town of Bryggen, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where winding cobblestone alleys transport you back through 400 years of Hanseatic domination. Indeed, the Middle Ages lurk around every bend of this wonderfully preserved Norwegian treasure, and yet it’s also alive with a youthful exuberance evident in eclectic coffee houses, sensational art galleries and a burgeoning local music scene. Perhaps, the best way to take it all in is by hopping aboard the city’s funicular and climbing some 1,000 feet above sea level. As sweeping views of the city, the surrounding mountains and glistening fjords envelop you; it’s impossible not to marvel at the beauty of Bergen.
Travel Tips
1
It’s easy to get around downtown on foot, and most of the big sights are within walking distance of one another. Bikes, ferries, and buses are all available transportation options here. Note that renting a car can be expensive because of the limited parking options. Taxis can be hailed in the center of the city and in other parts of town, too. The ferry system is commonly used by travelers wanting to get to various fjords throughout the region, but those are often multi-day journeys. Bergen’s light rail is called the Bybanen, which is an effective way to get to popular tourist sights in Bergen.
2
Because you’re close to the city center on your Bergen fjord cruise, there’s no need to worry about going out of your way to find good shopping. The best shopping is in the historic Bryggen area, and there are also boutiques selling wool goods and locally made ceramics nearby. The city’s main shopping district, where you’ll find dozens of Norwegian name brands, boutiques, and local craftsmen, is just beyond Olav Kyrres Gate.
3
The official currency of Norway is the krone (kr). Norway is moving gradually toward being a cash-free society, so debit and credit cards are commonly accepted here, unlike some other parts of Europe. MasterCard, Visa, and American Express are widely used. ATMs in Norway are called “mini banks,” so look out for that if you’re looking for a place to withdraw a little cash or check your balance. Don’t worry about tipping your taxi driver or restaurant server, as the tip is usually already included in a service charge on your bill. When you pay with a credit card in Norway, there will usually be a blank line for leaving a tip if you wish to tip additionally.
