Ruth Wakefield created America’s most famous and now favorite cookie in 1938 by breaking up bits of a chocolate bar into her cookie dough. The chocolate bits held their chunky shape, and chocolate chip cookies were born. Today, with so many sizes and flavors of chocolate chips available, variations abound.
