Top Tips for Solo Cruise Staterooms, Socializing, and Entertainment

Sometimes you don’t want to wait to see a destination until you have a travel partner who can go with you. Or maybe you’ve done trips before with friends and have found it’s hard to agree and keep the peace on what to do during your vacation. Or maybe you just like the introspective time that solo travel can provide. Whatever the reason, you may be finding yourself contemplating a solo cruise and wondering how the logistic and socialization for such a vacation will work. Have no fear – we’ve compiled some top solo cruise tips for you that will have you feeling ready for a new solo travel adventure on a ship.

Is Taking a Solo Cruise Affordable?

The first thing to know for those of you contemplating a solo cruise is that you don’t need to be wealthy or stuck on a budget cruise line in order to be able to do so. This is no doubt good news if you’ve heard of the dreaded single supplement.

What’s a Single Supplement?

In case you aren’t aware of what a single supplement is, it’s when cruise lines add on an additional fee when a traveler books a double occupancy stateroom for just one person. There’s good reason for this – cruise lines budget for double occupancy and that doesn’t just include the cruise fare. Once on board people spend money, so selling a double occupancy stateroom for half the price if just one person stays in it means the not only lose out on income from the double occupancy fare, but also from the additional spending.

How Do We Deal With This at Celebrity Cruises?

We like to keep our finger on the pulse of travel trends here at Celebrity Cruises and it hasn’t gone unnoticed that solo travel is – and has been – on the rise. From female solo travel blogs, to young adults making time to travel before settling down, to people traveling much longer and later in life, there are many times solo travel may present itself.

We don’t want you to have to forego a trip of lifetime because you don’t have a travel partner who can go with you, so with our newest ship, Celebrity Edge, we’ve designed it to make it easier for solo travelers.

Celebrity Edge has staterooms designed that are just for passengers taking a solo cruise. These single occupancy staterooms are interior rooms that offer a budget-friendly option for those traveling on their own, and can make for an excellent cruise deal.

Called Single Staterooms, these accommodations may be practical, but they are still decorated in the same modern hues with comfortable and luxurious amenities just like the other staterooms on board. What’s more, the Edge Single Stateroom with Infinite Veranda provides solo cruise guests with their own slice of al fresco paradise on a private balcony. The Infinite Veranda isn’t like your normal cruise ship balcony either; with the push of a button the doors to your veranda seamlessly open and fold into the sides of the room, essentially turning your entire stateroom into a large veranda. It’s just one way Celebrity Edge aims to bring the outdoors in with its ingenious outward facing design. Cruising solo with Celebrity Cruises doesn’t mean foregoing the best and newest innovation on your cruise vacation.

The Edge Single Stateroom with Infinite Veranda is perfect for those who love to explore on their own due to that aforementioned private veranda plus a queen sized bed to spread out on, a well-appointed and closed-off bathroom, and a stylishly cozy seating area. The stateroom itself is 131 square feet, giving you plenty of space to move around. The Infinite Veranda provides an additional 45 square feet of living space during your solo cruise.

In addition to the Infinite Veranda, you can make new friends in the many lounges on board Celebrity Edge. Join your friends for dinner at one of the interactive specialty restaurants on board. Celebrity Edge has Eden, which serves up creatively prepared cuisine in a changing setting that plays host to intriguing performers (who are also your servers). Celebrity Edge and its Le Grande Bistro will also be a popular place to dine on Le Petit Chef nights, thanks to the 3D Image Mapping Technology utilized on those evenings that bring your place setting to life as you watch the world’s smallest chef catch and cook your dinner – right on your plate.

Specialty restaurants aren’t the only place to dine. You can also request an assigned seating each night at one of the four main dining rooms on board. That’s right, four! Cruise passengers on Celebrity Edge can pick from four different restaurants serving a variety of cuisine while on board the ship. The other nice thing is that each of these restaurants is included in the cost of your cruise fare, and you can switch up which one you want to eat in throughout the cruise. However, for a solo cruise, it’s often good to pick a restaurant with cuisine that you enjoy in case you eat there more than expected. That’s because you’ll get assigned seating at a set table with other like-minded travelers who you can then converse with throughout the cruise.

Celebrity Edge is the first ship in the Edge-class and three sister ships will be debuting over the next several years. Just like the first ship in the class, these subsequent ships are poised to revolutionize the cruise industry and the experience on board for solo cruise passengers.

Tips to Make New Friends During Your Solo Cruise

Wondering just how to go about making friends on your cruise? We have the inside scoop with lots of tips.

Get to Know the Crew During Your Solo Cruise

The crew on Celebrity Cruises’ fleet are friendly and engaging and are from all around the world. Many of our cruise passengers enjoy talking with them and learning about the area of the globe they’re from. Finding a bartender you get along with so you can have your own “local” bar on the ship is an easy way to feel comfortable in a lounge while cruising solo. In addition, get to know the cruise director. You’ll often see him or her walking around the ship and if they know you’re a solo cruise passenger, they may give you some insider tips on upcoming activities or entertainment you won’t want to miss.

Get Out and Mingle the First Night

You might be tempted to reside to your relaxing stateroom the first night, especially if you had to travel a long way to get to your solo cruise and are still feeling tired from the journey. However, the first night of the cruise is often when everyone is out and about around the ship, getting a feel for the vibe and learning about all the activities you can do.

If there are other solo cruise passengers on board, they’ll likely be scanning each room looking for other cruisers like them, so it’s a good chance for you to strike up a conversation and make some new friends the very first night of the cruise. Then you’ll have familiar faces to see throughout the rest of your cruise.

If you feel comfortable doing so, exchanging stateroom numbers is helpful, too, since you can call them later on in the cruise to arrange times to meet up for dinner or a drink or a game in the card room. It’s a large ship so it’s possible you may keep missing each other otherwise.

Say Yes to Dining with People

As you converse with others throughout the cruise, you may find yourself invited to join them for dinner. If it’s a couple you may worry about feeling like the third wheel, but don’t worry about that and say yes. It’s a great way to make friends, have a fun meal, and talk with other travelers about all the things you’ve done on the cruise so far while in port and other travel you’ve done.

And don’t feel like they just invited you along because they think you may be lonely as a solo cruiser. It’s more likely they are intrigued by you traveling on your own, want to get to know you better, and are tired of only dining with each other. Yes, that last one is true – even couples like to socialize and meet others on the ship so they’ll probably be delighted to have someone else to talk to for one meal.

Opt for an Assigned Seating Time for Dinner

Celebrity Cruises offers many opportunities for dining, from specialty restaurants to room service to Celebrity Select flexible dining. The latter can be intriguing since it gives you flexibility, but as a solo cruiser you’ll likely benefit more from doing a traditional assigned seating time if you desire some social interaction during your meals. With an assigned seating time, you’ll be sat at the same table each night with other cruise passengers and the same crew waiting on you. It will give you some familiarity as your tablemates, server, and sommelier get to know you and your dining preferences – and sparkling personality!

If you find that you aren’t compatible with the other cruise passengers at your table, don’t suffer in silence. Talk to the maître d’ and ask for a different table at which to be sat, and don’t feel awkward about it. There are many reasons for someone to just not appear at dinner again. Your former table mates may just assume you’re at a specialty restaurant or had flexible dining, in which case your table can change nightly.

If you find yourself seated at a table on your own, have a book or journal on hand. A journal is a particularly lovely way to pass the time at dinner while waiting for each course since it gives you the opportunity to reflect on the day and write about all the amazing things you saw in port or did on the ship.

Do Shore Excursions Through the Cruise Line

We have an exciting array of shore excursion offered in each port that highlight the best parts of a destination and provide in-depth and adventurous experiences.

As a solo cruiser, that’s not the only reason to book shore excursions through us while in port. When you book a Celebrity Cruises shore excursion you know you’ll be spending your day surrounded by other travelers who are on your ship – most ports have multiple ships calling at them each day so you don’t want to spend the day making new friends with people who will board a different ship at the end of the day.

By doing a Celebrity Cruises shore excursion you’ll bond with fellow passengers through the experience of exploring the port together and then will have the chance to run into them again on the ship for more fun and conversation.

To foster interaction and talking with others on your shore excursion, choose an excursion that has a hands-on activity as opposed to just – for example – a bus tour. This gets people out of their element and provides easy conversation starters. Chatting with others while hiking through a rain forest or waiting on a ziplining platform is a lot easier than having to awkwardly turn around on a tour bus.

If you do have to take a shore excursion that is mostly sightseeing via bus, either for mobility issues or to achieve your goals of what to see while in port, try to sit up near the front so you’re close to the guide. When they’re not narrating, they’re usually open to side conversations and are a wealth of knowledge on the destination you’re visiting. You can ask questions and also learn about what it’s like to live there. It’s a way to have some socialization throughout your solo cruise day in port while also learning more about the city or town you’re visiting.

Plus, by doing a Celebrity Cruises shore excursion, you’ll have all the extra benefits that come with doing so. You’ll be conveniently guided right to your shore excursion transportation from the ship and are guaranteed to be back to the ship in time before it leaves for the next port. You can also partake in exclusive shore excursions such as Chef’s Market Discoveries and Private Journeys.

Solo Cruisers Meet-and-Greet Parties, Meet-ups, and Onboard Activities

Most itineraries have events for solo cruisers. Check your Celebrity Today newsletter each night to see what solo events are happening the following day. Also, the first night of the cruise there is typically a meet and mingle event put together for solo cruise passengers so you can meet other solo travelers right away. If you hit it off with someone, this is also a good night to speak with the maître d’ to see if you can be sat together or visit the shore excursion desk to plan some excursions to do together.

Another way to meet others you might click with is to take part in our beverage and culinary programs and mingle with like-minded passengers who, like you, appreciate a glass of fine wine or a perfectly spiced meal.

The food and wine program we offer includes classes and seminars that give you the chance to see cooking demonstrations, try cooking a new dish yourself, learn about the art of wine tasting, try delectable food and wine pairings, learn how the shape of glass can impact the way wine tastes, and even create your own wine blend. If wine isn’t your thing, you can learn the art of bartending in a mixology 101 class or sample a martini flight at the Martini Bar on board. Into whisky? Try the Macallan Flight Experience, which lets you taste a trio of whiskies. In addition, the casual atmosphere of the classes provide you with a chance to meet others while you all have fun learning about delicious cuisine and world-class wines.
