Miami, Florida

Welcome to the official Cruise Capital of the World, a world-class city with a world-class beach. Before your cruise from Miami, stay and play. Within view of Miami cruises, colorful characters from macaws to monkeys greet you at Jungle Island, with pink flamingos, white cockatoos, and green parrots. In Miami Beach, iconic Lummus Park frames the Art Deco hotels, fashion models, and fancy cars. From South Pointe Park, watch the ships glide out to sea. On Lincoln Road, you could spend three months eating at a different restaurant every day—trust us, we did it. Up the coast at Bal Harbour Shops, designer boutiques challenge fashionistas, who shop till they drop at Haulover Park Beach, where the north end is clothing optional.

Cruises from Miami dock near Bayfront Park, a place to stroll the bay and get a bite. The Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science just debuted with a spectacular planetarium, and the new Pérez Art Museum Miami truly embraces its bay-side perch. A bit north, hipsters have turned graffiti into serious street art in the world's most unique arts district, Wynwood, while the Miami Design District attracts fans of interiors and fashion.

In Little Havana, urban pioneers rehab old buildings and open new restaurants, bars, and shops. In Mediterranean-style Coral Gables, you can swim in Venetian Pool, a coral quarry transformed into a giant swimming hole with waterfalls, caves, and grottoes. Woodsy Coconut Grove is a cool neighborhood surrounding a marina where Miami City Hall originally served as the seaplane base. Vizcaya Museum & Gardens displays priceless furnishings and art in a grand estate.

Dining in Greater Miami is fresh on many levels. The seafood served tonight was still swimming this morning. Before cruises from Miami, visitors enjoy Florida lobster, grouper, mahi-mahi, pompano, snapper, and stone crabs. The go-to lunch is a Cuban sandwich, and the coffee is Cuban, too. Enjoy anything orange—slices, juices, sauces, marmalades, and dressings. More fruits include mango, papaya, jackfruit, avocado, and passion. The must-have dessert is sweet, tart, creamy, key lime pie, made from yellow key limes, not green Persian limes. Take advantage of Miami cruises to indulge.
Travel Tips
1
Public transportation in Miami includes the Metrobus, the Metrorail, the Metromover, and the trolley. The Metrobus is a bus system that runs all around the Greater Miami area, while the Metrorail runs from the north to the south end of Miami with stops in downtown. The free Metromover covers downtown Miami and Brickell and also connects with the Metrorail and Metrobus at downtown stations. For traveling around Miami and Miami Beach, trolleys offer free services with many routes available. If you prefer private transportation, taxis are widely available, as are cars through ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Lyft.
2
There’s world-class shopping all over Miami, but for shops near the port, head to Bayside Marketplace, overlooking Biscayne Bay. This mall has open-air walkways leading to over 100 shops. At this mall, you’ll also find restaurants and bars, street performers and live music, and even a launchpad for boat tours along the Miami coastline. Brickell City Centre is also close to the port, offering four levels of shopping, dining, and entertainment, and housing some international names such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Nike, Lululemon, and Sephora.
3
The currency in Miami, Florida is the U.S. dollar, and you’ll be able to find ATMs all over the city. Tipping is part of the local culture and is expected in restaurants, bars, and taxis. A common tip for most services is 15% to 20% of the total amount.

Day at Sea Highlights

George Town, Grand Cayman

No destination blends global finance with the Caribbean lifestyle quite like the Cayman Islands. This upscale destination offers world-class restaurants, designer boutiques, and duty-free shopping, plus white sand beaches, brilliant blue waters, and teeming coral reefs. Enjoy postcard views of George Town, Seven Mile Beach, and West Bay from the custom-designed Cayman Explorer. You can step down easily into shallow waters to interact with the welcoming stingrays.

Launch your snorkeling adventure from a luxurious catamaran. Swim right through the World War II naval vessel USS Kittiwake, now a shallow artificial reef. Finish with leisurely sunbathing and cool cocktails. Swim with the denizens of Stingray City in the crystalline waters of Coral Reef Gardens. After snorkeling with the graceful rays, recharge with an island barbecue on Seven Mile Beach. You'll shop till you drop in the duty-free boutiques of George Town. Find gifts for everyone—including yourself—like china, crystal, jewelry, antiques, and resort wear by renowned designers.

Conch shells were the homes of tasty mollusks. Try Cayman conch in salads, chowders, and fritters. Cruises to Grand Cayman Islands are not complete without a sample of the rich Caribbean curries, and don't miss the fresh produce: coconut, cassava, and plantains. For dessert, have some rum cake.
Travel Tips
1
The easiest way to get around Grand Cayman if you’re not joining a shore excursion is by taxi, and you’ll find cars waiting at the port. There’s also a local ride-sharing service, for which you’ll need to download an app. Otherwise, the island has an efficient bus network, with minibuses operating multiple routes to all the main attractions. You can wait at a bus stop or simply flag the driver down. Mopeds, bicycles, and quad bikes are available to rent, but remember that driving is on the left here.
2
George Town has a wide range of elegant shops, many specializing in high-end jewelry and luxury labels. Be on the lookout for colorful Caribbean art, antique maps, and even shipwreck coins. Local jams, spicy sauces, and rum cakes make great gifts to take home. For something really unusual, look for jewelry made from Caymanite, a gemstone that comes in a spectrum of earthy colors. It’s found only in the Cayman Islands and made into beautiful bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and cufflinks by local craftspeople.
3
The local currency in the Cayman Islands is the Cayman Islands dollar, which is pegged to the U.S. Dollar at $1.20 U.S. to $1 Cayman. Most places will display prices in both currencies. You’ll find that U.S. dollars are widely accepted, although you may be given change in local currency. There are ATMs in George Town if you need cash. Regarding tipping etiquette, meanwhile, 10% to 15% is typical in restaurants, and $5 to $10 per person for tour guides.

Cozumel, Mexico

Amid the largest coral reef in the West, this Caribbean island lures anglers, divers, snorkelers, and beachgoers. Fish the flats or head out to blue water to hunt for big game—mahi-mahi, marlin, sailfish, and more. Bring your dive card with you on your cruise to Cozumel and witness all the natural wonders waiting below the surface, like neon tropical fish, swaying sea fans, and vibrant coral colonies. Or, go snorkeling to see the show without a dive card. Curl up on the beach in a hammock with a cold one. At Playa Mia, you can even fly down Twin Twister waterslides.

Go cruise shopping for beautiful Mexican silver, amber, and other artisanal gifts in San Miguel. Or, hop a ferry to charming Playa del Carmen, on the mainland, and stroll along la Quinta Avenida for more inviting restaurants, bars, and shops. Down the coast from Playa, you can explore the ancient Maya city of Tulum, perched impressively on a cliff, overlooking the brilliant sea and powdery beach below. Cozumel cuisine means fresh seafood. Savor the catch of the day served on a banana leaf, or enjoy it marinated in lime juice, cilantro, onion, and tomato. Of course, this is the place for Mexican classics like tacos, guacamole—and margaritas.
Travel Tips
1
You can rent a car while in Cozumel to get to the far reaches of the island, including some of the nature excursions and harder-to-reach parks. For daredevils, a scooter or bicycle is an exciting way to navigate the island. Helmets are required. There are plenty of taxis at the cruise terminal and around the island. Taxi drivers know their value on the island, so be sure to settle on a fare before you drive off. It’s easy to explore areas surrounding the port on foot if you feel like stretching your legs during your stop in Cozumel.
2
After you disembark from the cruise ship, particularly at International Pier, you’ll find duty-free shops and souvenir shacks before you leave the terminal. The Royal Village Shopping Center is also conveniently located near International Pier, where you can purchase handmade goods, jewelry, and other items. San Miguel has plentiful shopping, just two or three miles away from International Pier. Look out for silver jewelry, handmade ceramics, colorful hammocks, beach fashions, and papier-mache ornaments.
3
Though the local currency is the peso, many stores will accept U.S. dollars (USD), so you likely won’t need to exchange money. Find ATMs near the cruise docks for all your withdrawal needs. Tipping is encouraged, particularly for bartenders, tour guides, and restaurant service. A tip of 15-20% is recommended.

Costa Maya, Mexico

Costa Maya boasts beautiful beaches on the Caribbean Sea, which is ideal for divers and snorkelers alike who enjoy exploring the beautiful Banco Chinchorro coral reef that lies just off the coast. History buffs will surely love exploring the lesser-known Mayan ruins, Cacchoben and Kohunlich; meanwhile there's something for everyone at the new shopping mall, which, while great for shopping, also features a central plaza with saltwater pools and 'swim-up' bars.
Travel Tips
1
The pier at Costa Maya is long, and on a hot day, you might want to take the free trolley service from your ship to the port village. All the attractions of the village itself are accessible on foot. Otherwise, there’s a shuttle bus to Mahahual, the nearest beach, for a small fee. Taxis wait outside the port and golf carts are available to rent. You can rent a car, too, but most visitors choose to book shore excursions.
2
Cruises to Costa Maya, Mexico, put you right in the middle of a vast array of shopping opportunities. Discover elaborate, hand-painted plates, traditional blown-glass pieces, woven Mexican blankets, and beautiful silver and turquoise jewelry. A Maya-style hand-woven hammock makes a great souvenir, as do hand-painted Talavera tiles, a Spanish legacy. If you’re looking for an edible souvenir, pick up a pack of vanilla, a costly spice that’s widely available in Mexico. There are dozens of shops within the port itself, but you may find a greater choice if you extend your search to nearby Mahahual.
3
The currency in Mexico is the peso, although U.S. dollars are widely accepted. If you pay cash in dollars, you may receive change in pesos, so pay attention as their value is completely different. Also, the same dollar sign is used for both pesos and U.S. dollars, so always double-check prices. ATMs are located at the cruise terminal and dispense U.S. dollars. Mexico has a strong tipping culture, especially in tourist areas. Tip 10% to 20% in restaurants, and round up the fare in a taxi. Tip local guides up to 10% of the cost of the tour. It’s preferable to tip in pesos rather than dollars.
