Sydney, Australia

Considered one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the Southern Hemisphere, Sydney offers so much—from beaches and wineries to stunning landmarks and world-class shopping. Tour architectural marvels like the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbor Bridge, view life below the surface from Sydney Aquarium’s underwater walkways, or take it all in from above on a tour of the Sydney Tower. You’re never far from nature in this thriving urban center. Well-known surf beaches, zoos, national parks, whale watching tours, bush tours, and the Royal Botanic Gardens—featuring over 7,500 plants—offer visitors a chance to enjoy the area’s sunshine, lush greenery, wildlife, and clear blue oceans. Sydney is not only Australia’s oldest city, it is also one of the most ethnically diverse cities on the globe, offering a wealth of cuisines, unique museums, and cultural opportunities. Explore lively pubs, shops, and historic buildings at The Rocks, located on Sydney harbor.
Travel Tips
1
Sydney has a variety of public transportation options. Its extensive bus route system goes to many of the most popular tourist sites, plus there are a light rail and ferry service. In addition, the Sydney Metro provides fast, frequent service around the city. As for taxis, you’ll find them waiting right outside the Sydney cruise terminal, as well as in taxi ranks all around the city.
2
You will find an assortment of shopping malls near the Sydney cruise port. Some of the largest are Westfield Sydney, The Galeries, and World Square. For local boutiques, head to the intersection of Oxford Street and Glenmore Road. In the neighborhood of Paddington, you’ll find shops with cutting-edge fashion from new designers. For souvenirs and art, head to The Rocks near the Sydney Opera House, or the Strand for Australian hats and boots.
3
Australia’s official currency is the Australian dollar. The paper bills come in increments of $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100. Credit cards are widely accepted, but traveler’s checks are not. Tipping isn’t expected in Australia, but is appreciated. If you do tip, a smaller amount around 10% is usually acceptable.

Day at Sea Highlights

Noumea, New Caledonia

Journey to a casual and cosmopolitan French colonial city of turquoise water and white-sand beaches. Nouméa offers world-class beaches, incredible snorkeling and diving opportunities, and a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for shopping, sitting at a seaside café, or strolling. Called the French Riviera of the Pacific, Nouméa boasts lovely French seaside restaurants, boutiques selling the finest Parisian designs, and streets lined with French colonial architecture. Nouméa’s cuisine reflects the city’s French roots. French flavors, fresh seafood, and local specialties such as Bougna (a Melanesian dish of seafood, chicken, and local produce) and mangrove oysters are all on the menu at Nouméa. Visit the Place des Cocotiers, where you can explore local artisanal goods, fashion, and taste delicious homemade specialties. Journey to the summit of Ouen Toro Hill for incredible views of the bay and city below. Explore the city’s rich colonial and World War II history at key landmarks and museums which feature World War relics and Melanesian art. Visit Nouméa’s aquarium, where you can view endangered sea turtles, or plunge into Nouméa’s wildlife-rich water and see a beautiful coral reef.
Travel Tips
1
Luckily, you can see much of the sights in Nouméa on foot, particularly in the downtown area. There’s a shuttle for tourists which will drop you off at the town’s best-known sights. Taxis are available, but you typically have to call them or hail them from the street once you’ve left the pier. You can also rent a car or bicycle to get around Nouméa and the surrounding areas. Hop on a water taxi to get to Nouméa’s smaller islets and enjoy stunning water views.
2
Nouméa isn’t famous for its shopping, but there are impressive local markets along Rue Clemenceau where local vendors and farmers sell their wares and produce each morning. French clothing boutiques are mainly what you’ll find in terms of shopping in town. If you’re serious about shopping during your cruise to Nouméa, New Caledonia, head to shopping centers Galerie du Palm Beach and La Promenade in nearby Anse Vata.
3
The CFP franc is the recognized currency when you’re on a cruise to Nouméa, New Caledonia. Australian and US dollars are sometimes used, but some vendors will not accept USD. Tipping isn’t a common part of the culture in New Caledonia. You can, however, leave a tip for a tour guide if they went above and beyond for you during your time in Nouméa.

Day at Sea Highlights

Suva, Fiji

On your cruise to Suva, capital of Fiji, you'll discover a mix of 21st-century architecture, Art Deco gems, and 19th-century British colonial buildings. Although Suva is built on a peninsula, surrounded by ocean, this part of Viti Levu, one of more than 330 Fijian islands, is more mangrove than beach.

Suva offers several pleasant parks and gardens near the port. Ratu Sukuna Park offers pretty views of the harbor. Next door is Suva Civic Center, an arts and cultural venue.

Historic Albert Park, on coastal Victoria Parade, was the site of the first-ever airplane to land in Fiji. Next door, Thurston Gardens displays botanical specimens in several greenhouses and hiking trails. It's also the site of the Fiji Museum, with archaeological materials going back 3,700 years and cultural objects representing indigenous inhabitants and immigrant communities.

Ten minutes up the hills from Suva, serene Colo-i-Suva Forest Park lures residents and guests with clear river waters amid a spectacular rainforest, making it perfect for a cool dip, a bit of bird watching, and a picnic in the shade, with temperatures cooler than the city. The natural beauty will soothe your soul.

A hub of entertainment for Oceania, Fiji hosts regional sports and activities in several multipurpose venues. Check Vodafone Arena, ANZ National Stadium, and Albert Park.

When it's time to shop for mementos of your Suva cruise, look for Cumming Street, blocks from the port. Colorful colonial buildings feel like you're stepping back in time. Hungry? Along Victoria Parade, you'll find cafés and restaurants, from Italian and pizza, to Indian and Japanese, to steaks and seafood.
Travel Tips
1
Buses are a cheap and easy way to get around in Suva if you’re interested in getting to know the public transit system. Taxis are also very cheap in Fiji. If you’d like, you can negotiate with a taxi driver for them to pick you up and drop you off at multiple destinations in town. You can also walk to many of the main sights. When you schedule an excursion with Celebrity, transportation is included.
2
You’re better off finding shopping in downtown Suva. There’s not much in the way of shopping near the port except for the Suva Market, where you can chat with local artisans and vendors as you peruse their handmade goods, jewelry, clothing, and souvenirs. There’s also a shuttle bus that takes passengers to more upscale shopping beyond the center of town.
3
Use the official currency, the Fijian dollar ($), while on your Suva cruise. There should be plenty of ATMs scattered around Suva, and it’s recommended to carry cash just to be safe. Many places don’t accept credit cards. Tipping isn’t a custom in Fiji, so you’re not obligated to leave a tip for your tour guide, server, or taxi driver. It is appreciated if you round up to the nearest Fijian dollar, but it’s not a requirement.

Lautoka, Fiji

During a cruise to Fiji, receive a warm welcome and see a traditional meke (dance) in the peaceful village of Lauwaki, on Viti Levu. Although the Fijian archipelago has more than 330 islands, most of the 920,000 locals live on just two, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Despite Fiji's exotic image—white beaches, turquoise waters, friendly smiles—the island paradise enjoys one of the most developed economies in the South Pacific.

Fiji's Garden of the Sleeping Giant may be one of the best kept secrets in horticulture. Its magnificent collection of Asian orchids and Cattleya hybrids—more than 2,000 varieties—evolved from the private collection of American actor Raymond Burr. Now open to the public, it makes for a wonderful day of admiring the delicate flowers and wandering the canopy-covered boardwalks, landscaped lawns, and lily ponds.

Also at the base of the Sabeto mountains, you can embrace the therapeutic powers of a natural geothermal mud pool. Slopping around in the mud here will leave you feeling completely refreshed—if only from all the giggling. Mud is rubbed on, then washed away, leaving your skin exfoliated and glowing. The Fijian people have enjoyed this treatment for generations.

For a bit more action, fly high above the rainforest canopy on a five-level zip line that whisks you over streams and waterfalls, and hike among the ancient trees full of colorful butterflies and parrots.

To immerse yourself in Fiji's cultural traditions, tour popular Nadi town. You can experience folkloric performances, explore a wonderland of orchids, and shop for traditional woodcarvings, pottery, and tapa cloth to take back on your Lautoka cruise.
Travel Tips
1
For Lautoka cruise passengers, the best way to explore the area is on foot or by booking an excursion to the area’s natural attractions, where transportation is typically included. There are also taxis available on the island.
2
The most common shopping in the area is provided by souvenirs shacks and handmade goods from locals. The Lautoka Market is the main shopping market, where vendors and street eats are around every corner. This open-air market is famous for fresh mangos, pineapple, tomatoes, locally sourced fish, and more.
3
The Fijian dollar is the official currency of Fiji, and you’ll find it’s a good practice to carry cash while traveling on your cruise to Lautoka. Credit cards are hit or miss here. You’re not obligated to tip your taxi driver or restaurant server while you’re in Lautoka, but rounding up to the nearest dollar is greatly appreciated.

Travel Tips
1
Transportation options are limited in this remote area. Taxis and car rentals are available, but you may want to book a taxi in advance of arriving. Renting bicycles is popular with active visitors who want to tour the island on two wheels.
2
Shopping is fairly minimal near the area where ships anchor in Easo on the island of Lifou. Vendors at the open air market will sell you fresh coconuts to drink from, and it’s also a prime spot for scouting out potential souvenirs and handmade goods like straw bags and clothing. It’s a modest market, but the wares are colorful and distinct.
3
The CFP franc is the recognized official currency. When you’re on a cruise to Lifou, Loyalty Island, note that credit cards as well as Australian and US dollars are commonly used, though Australian currency is more likely to be accepted of the two. Tipping isn’t part of the culture in New Caledonia, but tipping your tour guide is really polite, particularly if they provided great service to you while on the tour.
