Isafjordur, Iceland

Isafjordur, the largest town in the Westfjords peninsula, is known for its breathtaking landscapes. Here guests can enjoy and wide variety of outdoor activities from biking, hiking, kayaking and horseback riding to whale watching. They can explore the history of the town that started as a trading post in the 16th century with growth triggered in the 19th century by salt fish production which is still the most important industry for the town.
Travel Tips
1
Almost everything in town is located within walking distance of the port, so you won’t need public transportation. If you choose to explore the Westfjords, there are several boat tour operators that will take you to nearby destinations, such as Vigur and the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve.
2
While the town of Isafjordur is small, you’ll find several shops within the Old Town that specialize in local goods, including handmade jewelry, ceramics, glassware, and wool knitted items.
3
The local currency in Isafjordur is the Icelandic krona (ISK). Credit cards are widely accepted in Iceland, even when paying for small amounts, but it’s never a bad idea to carry a little bit of local cash. Tipping is not expected in Iceland, as many bills already include gratuity and service charges in the final total. If you’d like to leave something extra, anything less than 10% of the total amount is acceptable.

Akureyri, Iceland

Akureyri, Iceland is the country’s second-largest city and one of the country’s most important ports and fishing centers. Affectionately known as the Capital of North Iceland, it has a cool café scene, a growing gourmet movement, and a bustling nightlife that proves this city is more than meets the eye. From fabulous summer festivals fueled by the Midnight Sun, like the Akureyri Summer Arts festival (late June-late August), to some of the best skiing this side of the arctic circle, Akureyri, Iceland is a laid-back Nordic city and a study in contrasts. Soar into the blue sky to discover Grimsey Island, home to only 92 residents and thousands of sea birds. The city’s Botanical Gardens is famed for its collection of high-latitude plants and well worth a visit. Explore the ancient lava formations of Dimmuborgir and the geothermal landscape of bubbling mud and hissing fumaroles at Namafjall Mountain. The Great Fish Day of Dalvik, on the second Saturday in August, where revelers feast for free on the North Atlantic’s bounty is a paradise for seafood lovers.

The city is best known as the gateway to Iceland’s natural wonders – thundering waterfalls, gurgling lava fields, snow-capped mountains, sweeping fjords, and robust folk culture. Whatever you choose, it's sure to be the adventure of a lifetime.
Travel Tips
1
Taxis and buses are available modes of transportation during your time in Akureyri. Many travelers who stay longer than a day will rent a car to explore nearby towns. Otherwise, walking in the city center is the commonly chosen method of transportation to see the local sights. Bicycle rentals are available, too.
2
The most popular shopping items people buy when visiting the country are authentic Icelandic knit sweaters. Tax-free shopping is the norm in Iceland, and shops will have a sign in the window that indicates whether or not they’re tax free. Otherwise, Akureyri offers a few large shopping malls as well as artisan-made goods in the city center.
3
When traveling in Iceland on an Akureyri cruise, you’ll use the krona, which is the official currency of Iceland. Many establishments accept the euro as well. Most places take credit and debit cards, so carrying cash isn’t absolutely necessary. Iceland isn’t a very cash-centric society. Leaving a tip isn’t customary, whether you’re at a restaurant or in a taxi.

Day at Sea Highlights

Prins Christian Sund (Cruising)

Named for King Christian VIII of Denmark, this dramatic fjord separates the southernmost islands from the rest of South Greenland, a land of jagged mountains and green pastures where sheep farms border icy fjords and Norse history intersects with modern communities. Prince Christian Sound presents beautiful scenery for cruising, with mountains reaching 4,000 feet, glaciers inching toward the sea, and tidal currents that limit the formation of ice.

Qaqortoq, Greenland

The largest town in South Greenland, which can still be covered on foot, offers visitors art, culture, Norse history, boat tours, hot springs, kayaking, and hiking. It's like an arctic riviera, but with floating icebergs and frolicking whales instead of sandy beaches and palm trees. Next to the central square, with historic buildings and pleasant cafés, Qaqortoq Museum displays a mix of modern art and classic culture. Trek up the hills for a stunning panorama of the area, complete with migrating sea ice. Take an excursion out to the local hot springs. Ahhh, this is the life.
Travel Tips
1
Qaqortoq is compact and walkable; the center is easy to explore on foot. Taxis are available, too, although there are no ride-sharing services. There’s also a bus service. If you book a tour, you’ll most likely travel by boat. Local companies offer helicopter tours in summer for spectacular views down over the fjords and mountains of South Greenland.
2
Look out for locally made jewelry, soapstone carvings, local skincare products, and hats and scarves made from the exquisitely soft musk ox wool. More unusual souvenirs include ulu knives, traditionally used by women, and tupilaks, small carvings made from bone or antler, believed in Greenlandic mythology to ward off evil. You’ll find souvenir stalls dotted around the town and near tourist attractions, although there are no big shops as such. Be aware that an export permit may be required if you buy anything made from whalebone.
3
The official currency of Greenland is the Danish krone (DKK), but you’ll find Euros and U.S. dollars may be accepted in some establishments. You may be given change in krone, though, and will most likely lose out on the exchange rate. Credit and debit cards are less likely to be used in smaller shops. A service charge is typically included in your bill at restaurants.

Day at Sea Highlights

Halifax, Nova Scotia

Located on the shores of the world's second-largest natural harbor, the "City of Trees" adds to the pastoral beauty of Canada's maritime region. An extensive network of walking trails extends from the waterfront out to a series of beautiful parks and vibrant gardens, inviting exploration.
Travel Tips
1
Getting around Halifax is easy. You can walk along the waterfront right from the cruise terminal, or rent a bicycle. Taxis wait outside the terminal and rideshares operates here. Metro Transit runs bus routes throughout the city and beyond to Bedford, Dartmouth, Halifax, Sackville, Timberlea, and Cole Harbour. The ferry is a great way to get around and enjoy views of the skyline. It takes 15 minutes to cross from the waterfront to Dartmouth and is an enjoyable and affordable way to travel like a local and take in the scenery.
2
If you’re in Halifax on a Saturday, you can visit the oldest-running farmer’s market in North America, which is located on Lower Water Street. Pick up souvenirs from here including handmade sea glass jewelry, tins of maple syrup, local wines, and Nova Scotian knitwear. Otherwise, great things to buy include local art, pottery, Amos pewter, crystal, and beauty products. Packs of cherry-flavored lobster-shaped gummies are a fun and novel trinket to take home for kids.
3
The currency in Halifax is the Canadian dollar. You’ll find plenty of ATMs around the city. Credit cards are also widely accepted in Halifax, though check with the business or taxi driver beforehand if you’re not sure. Tipping for services is common in Halifax and is expected for dining or taxi rides. The tipping culture in Canada is similar to the United States. A tip of 15% to 20% of the total bill is appropriate for good service in a restaurant, and 10% to 15% for taxi rides.
