Fort Lauderdale, Florida

In the 1800s, William Lauderdale built a fort. Today, 16 million visitors come each year for miles of broad white sandy beaches, dozens of lush green golf courses, and Caribbean cruises from Fort Lauderdale. Stroll the famous beachfront promenade, just 15 minutes from the port, and plunge into the warm Atlantic.

Head downtown to Las Olas Boulevard, paralleling New River, to sip lattes in outdoor cafés, shop chic boutiques, and catch concerts at the performing arts center. Stop at Stranahan House, the city's oldest structure, built in 1901 as a trading post and preserved as a museum, or explore a whole village of historic buildings at History Fort Lauderdale. Join a Segway tour along the river or a waterborne cruise of Millionaire's Row.

During your cruise to Fort Lauderdale, head out to the Everglades and enjoy Flamingo Gardens, home to pink flamingos, snarling alligators, black bears, and Florida panthers—plus exotic trees, butterfly gardens, and native flowers.

You'll find great shopping on Fort Lauderdale cruises. Look for high fashion at Galleria Fort Lauderdale, north of the port and blocks from the ocean. Head west to Sawgrass Mills for 350 designer outlets, specialty shops, and eateries. Spend a relaxing day in downtown Hollywood, south of the port, for quaint shops, sidewalk cafés, and events in the park.

Discover Floribbean cuisine, a fusion of old Florida favorites with new Caribbean influences. Local seafood includes lobster, grouper, mahi-mahi, pompano, snapper, tuna, and stone crabs.

Florida dominates production of citrus fruits. Before you cruise from Fort Lauderdale, take advantage of anything orange—juices, sauces, marinades, marmalades, dressings, soups, and cakes. Try authentic key lime pie, which is sweet, tart, creamy, and yellow—not green—in a Graham cracker crust.
Travel Tips
1
Fort Lauderdale’s Riverwalk and beachfronts are fairly walkable, but you’re better off getting a taxi, using rideshares, or renting a car for longer distances. You can also take the Tri-Rail, which makes more frequent stops in South Florida. The distinctive Brightline trains will whisk you to Miami in just 38 minutes and West Palm Beach in 45 minutes. The Sun Trolley, meanwhile, is a fun way to navigate the city, as is the Riverwalk Water Trolley.
2
Though a little further from Port Everglades, Sawgrass Mills Mall is a huge shopping complex with over 350 outlets, designer shops, and restaurants. You could spend an entire day shopping here. For shopping a little closer to the cruise port, head to The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale.
3
The U.S. Dollar (USD) is the official currency in Fort Lauderdale and all other areas of Florida. You’ll find ATMs almost everywhere. If you need to exchange currencies, most airports and large banks have exchange centers available. While at a bar or restaurant, a tip of 15% to 20% for good service is part of the culture. Be sure to tip your barista, taxi driver, or bellhop as well.

Day at Sea Highlights

Ponta Delgada, Azores

Ponta Delgada, Azores: Formed from the peaks of a vast underwater volcanic mountain range, Ponta Delgada is the capital city of São Miguel island and is considered by many to be the most important city in the Azores archipelago. A stroll along the town’s harbor front promenade will provide gorgeous scenic views of the turquoise blue Atlantic Ocean, as well as fascinating architecture dating back to the 16th century Renaissance. Hiking, kayaking and surfing are among the popular water sports on cruises to Azores. April through September whale watching joins the ranks of water activities when regular sightings of various types of the mammal can be spotted during the season, including short-finned the pilot whales, Sowerby’s beaked whale, and sometimes even a blue whale.

Top Hot Springs and Geysers in Azores
Volcanic activity formed these islands millions of years ago and continues to play an important role in shaping the vivid beauty and attractions of Azores today. Volcanic craters, gardens, lakes, and natural wonders like hot springs and geysers abound on a cruise to Azores.

Poca da Dona Beija
Head to Poca da Dona Beija in the town of Furnas, for a dip in one of its five thermal pools. The warm waters have hints of orange from the iron that runs through and considered to be therapeutic, as well as relaxing.

Lagoa do Fogo
Lagoa do Fogo (Fire Lake) is by far the islands most grand natural wonder. Located in the middle of São Miguel, the tranquil lake is a result of waters that fill out the grounds of an extinct crater.

Terra Nostra Park
Explore the 200-year-old garden which hosts beautiful collections of cultivated trees, plants, and flowers native to Azores. The park also features a thermal spring pool with warm temperatures of about 104 degrees Fahrenheit and essential minerals for a soothing and restful bath.

Lagoa Das Furnas
Make your way to the village of Furnas for the breathtaking hot springs of Lagoa Das Furnas (Furnas Crater Lake), one of the other crater lakes on the island. While there you can also sample, cozido, a local Portuguese stew that is prepared by lowering the pot into a hot spring and slow-cooked for hours using the natural geothermal heat.
Travel Tips
1
If you want to skip the walk into the city center or want to get to another part of the island, you can find taxis available for hire at the end of the pier. There are also private car services available on the island, but these have to be prearranged before you arrive in port. An easy way to explore beyond Ponta Delgada is to book a shore excursion, which conveniently picks you up at the pier and is guaranteed to get you back to the ship before it departs for the next port.
2
Shopping is available near the pier, making it convenient for travelers on a cruise to Ponta Delgada to do some souvenir shopping while in port. For the most plentiful array of shopping, head to the town center, which is only about a 10-minute walk from the pier. You’ll even find a multi-story mall there that is home to over one hundred shops: the ritzy Parque Atlantico. Some good souvenirs to take home with you include hand-rolled cigars, local tea, ceramic dishes that are hand painted, embroidered items, and Azorean wickerwork in the form of baskets.
3
The official currency of Ponta Delgada and the rest of São Miguel is the euro. If you need cash, you can find ATMs all around the island, including on the pier. Major credit cards such as Visa and Mastercard are also accepted at many businesses on the island. For tipping, there is no expected amount, though most people will leave behind a tip of between 5% to 10% for exceptional service.

Day at Sea Highlights

Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon, Portugal- See why this city stands out above all others as you stroll along elaborate mosaic sidewalks and pass by the Monument to the Discoveries. A quick trolley ride transports you to the cobblestone district of Baixa. Or be lured away and pampered in the resort cities of Cascais and Estoril.

This storied capital with a history that extends back before the Roman Empire is only 1 of 2 cities in Portugal designated as a global city by the Globalization and World Cities (GaWC) Study Group. Once one of the world’s great naval and shipping powers, modern day Lisbon is an important hub of finance, commerce, media, entertainment, arts, international trade, education, and tourism.

Take a wonderful tour through Lisbon and you’ll discover Graca, the beautifully restored old area of the city, filled with old tiled buildings and mansions and Chiado, Lisbon’s arts district, for a different air of sophistication with its many boutiques, galleries and theaters. And, of course, a cruise to Lisbon is not complete without sampling a nice bottle of Port wine; the fortified red wine that can be found throughout the country.
Travel Tips
1
The trams of Lisbon aren’t only a great way to get around the city, they’re also one of the top things to do in Lisbon. Take a ride on one of the vintage trams, particularly on Tram 28, which will take you to many of Lisbon’s top sights. Lisbon has an extensive bus system that covers over 140 different routes as well as a metro that is quick and clean and services many areas. Taxis are also available in Lisbon, and you can usually find some waiting outside the Lisbon cruise terminal. A unique way to get from one of Lisbon’s most popular neighborhoods to the next is the Santa Justa Lift, which is an elevator that connects the central Baixa neighborhood to the historic Bairro Alto district. It was a much-needed addition to Lisbon’s public transportation since it makes it much faster to travel between upper and lower Lisbon. Walking in Lisbon is also an option, but be aware that much of the city is hilly, so bring comfortable shoes if you choose to do so.
2
Head to Amar Lisboa for artisan ware or Bababodo for jewelry and fashionable clothing. To really get an iconic shopping experience while in Lisbon, head farther away from the port to Avenida Liberdade, one of the most expensive streets in Lisbon, lined by a variety of upscale and luxury stores and boutiques.
3
The local currency is the Euro and you’ll find ATMs all over the city dispensing Euro notes. Most places in Lisbon take credit cards, but not all do, so it’s good to double-check beforehand. Taxi drivers also aren’t required to accept credit cards, though some do. For tipping, it is acceptable to do so, but there is no customary amount. Generally, 10% to 15% of your total bill is a fair amount to leave for good service while in Portugal.

Vigo, Spain

Vigo, Spain- El Sireno, a gilded sculpture depicting a figure that is half man, half sea creature, towers over the city's lovely gardens and well-preserved historical buildings. The legendary black salts offshore on the Islas Cies are said to bring good health. Catholic pilgrims flock to the nearby sacred cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, built over the burial spot of St. James.

As one of Europe’s largest fishing ports and maritime centers, this coastal town located in northern Spain is famous for its amazingly fresh seafood. Dine like a local on your Vigo cruise, sampling tapas, the finest oysters, and Galician wines for a hearty lunch at a tapas bar or pescadería. Then stroll through the narrow winding streets of Casco Vello, the historic district, to Rua do Príncipe where you’ll find an assortment of boutiques for keepsakes and souvenirs. For a great view of the Galician coast, there are several beaches worth visiting such as Playa de Samîl with its 1,800 meters of sandy, white coastline.
Travel Tips
1
Vigo is very walkable for cruise visitors, though if you have some mobility restrictions and plan to visit El Castro citadel, you’ll likely want to hire a taxi or choose a shore excursion that includes a visit there. To hire a taxi, simply head outside the port gates, where drivers are often waiting. Expect to pay metered fares. Other transportation options include a hop-on, hop-off bus that departs from the tourist information center by the port which will take you to all of the top sites of Vigo at your leisure. City bus lines are also available that visit some of the sites outside of the city limits.
2
It’s not hard to find places to shop during a Vigo cruise port of call. The cruise terminal is located right by a large mall with a number of shops, including ones selling local crafts and jewelry. Farther from the port, you’ll find many stores catering to tourists that sell souvenirs and other local goods within the city center and the Old Town area. Look for Galician fashion boutiques for memorable clothing or traditional Galician pottery in craft and housewares stores.
3
The local currency of Vigo is the euro. You’ll be able to find ATMs throughout the city dispensing Euro notes. Currency exchange offices are located throughout the city, and most businesses accept credit cards in addition to cash for payment. Tipping in Spain isn’t expected, though it’s appreciated and common in upscale restaurants. If you want to tip for good service, 10% of the total bill is plenty.

La Coruna, Spain

If there ever was a seafaring city, La Coruña is it. It's been a port and gateway to world travelers for over 2000 years. And from almost any spot on your La Coruna cruise, you can witness spectacular panoramic views of the ocean. La Coruña is the capital of Spain’s Galicia region and boasts some 2000 years of history. Much of it can be discovered along the streets of its “Ciudad Vieja” or Old Town. Here, cobbled lanes roll up and down hills, winding past gothic churches, stately plazas, imposing fortifications and all manner of medieval relics. At the blustery tip of the city looms the Tower of Hercules, a still working Roman lighthouse, built in the 1st century AD, when its beacon marked the very limits of the civilized world. Beyond the shadows of history, you might find yourself bathed in sun-drenched bliss on a spectacular beach, or trying on the latest fashions found along the shopping streets of this commercial and cultural hotspot.
Travel Tips
1
It’s a short walk from the cruise terminal to the center of town, which is extra convenient for cruise passengers. You can reach most sightseeing destinations on foot. Taxis are available to hail from the cruise port as well, but it’s recommended to use those for destinations that are beyond walking distance. There is also a public bus system.
2
The area around La Coruña cruise port has some shops and a cafe. There’s also a shopping center called Los Cantones, where La Coruña cruise passengers can go shopping for fun or for necessities that might be lacking after days at sea. The main drag for shopping in the city is Calle San Andres. Note that many shops close on Sundays.
3
The official currency used in Spain is the euro, and you’ll find that debit and credit cards are widely accepted in this part of the country. Keeping some euros on hand is helpful for small, locally operated cafes and restaurants. In Spain, tipping is totally optional. Many leave 5% or less at restaurants. You can round up to the nearest euro when leaving a tip for a cab driver. Tipping your bartender is pretty rare here.

Day at Sea Highlights

Southampton, England

Southampton, England- Southampton is a bustling port city bursting with history, as well as shopping opportunities, great restaurants, and superb pubs. Located on England’s southern coast, the area has a deep connection with WWII, having been used as a staging area for the attack on D-Day. It’s also well-known to be the home port of the Queen Mary 2. Today, the city is largely defined by its universities and retail shopping. The real sightseeing, however, happens when you use this port as a jumping off point for attractions found outside, yet relatively close to the city. For instance, London is but a little over an hour away by train. You can also take a ferry to the Isle of Wight, an English holiday favorite with 25 miles of coastline, sand dunes and dramatic white cliffs. While on your Southampton cruise you can also visit the nearby, quaint town of Windsor where you can visit the many boutiques of High Street or enjoy a tour of historic Windsor Castle.
