Vancouver, British Columbia

Skyscrapers, mountains, and ocean come together seamlessly in Vancouver, without ever feeling crowded. Stanley Park alone is worth the visit, 1,000 acres of forest, totem poles, and scenic seawall right at the edge of downtown, while Gastown's cobblestone streets invite a leisurely afternoon and the local food scene punches well above its weight.

The city's multicultural character shows up especially at mealtime, where exceptional dim sum can be found just blocks from a classic seafood shack. With mountains visible from downtown streets and ski slopes less than an hour away, Vancouver manages to feel like an outdoor destination even before the ship leaves the harbor. Consistently ranked among the most livable cities in the world, it combines that outdoor access with genuine urban polish, excellent public transit, walkable neighborhoods, and a waterfront locals actually use rather than just admire.
Travel Tips
1
Vancouver is easy to get around. The Translink service incorporates bus, SeaBus, and the rapid transit SkyTrain, all of which can be managed by a single app. There are public bicycles to rent, and the city has plentiful bike lanes, so cycling is well managed. Uber and Lyft are both available. For a treat, take a seaplane ride and admire the city and mountains from above.
2
The Canada Place cruise ship terminal is located in Vancouver’s downtown area, where you’ll find the upscale CF Pacific Centre Mall and Robson Street, which is full of stylish boutiques. In Gastown, you can look for unique and authentic pieces of Northwest Coast Native and Inuit art at the Inuit Gallery. There are no shops in the cruise terminal itself, although the small Waterfront Centre Mall adjacent to Canada Place has a food court and shops for essentials and souvenirs.
3
The currency in Vancouver is the Canadian dollar. Although there is no foreign exchange service at the cruise terminal, you will find several ATM machines. There are exchange services throughout downtown Vancouver, as well as ATMs in hotels, banks, drug stores, and other venues. Canadian restaurants seldom include gratuities in the bill, and it is customary to tip an additional 15% to 20% of the total bill before tax.

Day at Sea Highlights

Sapporo (Muroran), Japan

Sapporo, Japan: Sapporo is the largest city on the island of Hokkaido and is located about 2 hours north of Muroran. In the heart of the city, Odori Avenue Park is filled with beautiful sculptures, a variety of fountains, 92 species of trees, and lots of flowerbeds. New art can be experienced in many ways throughout Sapporo with old houses, basements, and passageways continually being reinvented as beautiful galleries, shops, and bustling restaurants. Visit Sapporo Beer Museum and find out how the famous export is made, and, perhaps sample a few in the Biergarten. There are many other sights to discover on a Sapporo cruise, including the Sapporo City Clock, which has been marking time for over a century and the old Hokkaido government building, a neo-baroque building known as "Red Brick" that is lit up after dark. For authentic souvenirs and keepsakes, the Museum Store and Clark Gallery & Shift both offer wonderful locally made, handcrafted goods. Or stop in to Saturday Chocolate Factory Café for small-batch chocolates made with single-origin cacao beans.
Travel Tips
1
There are multiple trains available to take you from Muroran to Sapporo. The city of Sapporo has a robust public transit system which includes a subway system with three lines, a variety of buses, and rail passes for inter-city travel. There are also convenient day passes available for visitors who are only in the city for a short time. The city is numbered and organized in an easy-to-learn rectangular grid for travelers exploring on foot.
2
In Sapporo, there’s a variety of shops just outside the train station, so you can step off the train and immediately get to shopping. Stellar Place is one of the largest shopping malls in Japan, home to dozens of department stores, boutiques, beauty stores, and more. When you’re tired, head to one of the cafes within the mall for a pick-me-up coffee or tea.
3
You’ll use the official currency of Japan, the yen (JPY), during your Sapporo cruise. There are plenty of international ATMs throughout the city. Smaller stores and local shops may not accept credit cards, but bigger establishments take credit cards like MasterCard and Visa. Tipping isn’t a common practice in Japan; it’s sometimes even considered impolite. Generally, a 10% to 15% service charge will already be included in the bill.

Akita, Japan

Akita City is a bustling port in northern Japan where good food and good drinks are essential for weathering the long winters and over 3.6 metres of snow a year. Akita is the capital of Akita Prefecture, which is renowned for Akita dogs, high-quality rice and sake, and lively folk festivals. Revellers in traditional attire often greet cruise ships by balancing lantern-laden bamboo poles, which are part of the summer Kanto Festival. Look out for people dressed up as namahage ogres, too. You can explore this rich culture in the city's parks, historic buildings and cultural attractions.

Hakodate, Japan

A port city on the island of Hokkaido, Hakodate is best known for the spectacular views and the area's delicious, fresh seafood, sushi, squid, and ramen. From the top of the Mount Hakodate, you’ll enjoy a magnificent view of the city surrounded by the ocean. You can reach the summit by hiking trail, cable car, or auto. The former Goryōkaku Fort, Japan's first Western style fortress, is now used in as a public park and is a popular spot for cherry blossom viewing. The park also features the tall, white Goryōkaku Tower that offers a panoramic view of the park, including mainland Japan across the Tsugaru Strait on clear days. Hakodate is literally a town of hot springs, and it even offers steamy outdoor footbaths to pedestrians.
Travel Tips
1
Hop on the complimentary shuttle bus and get off at JR Hakodate Station to explore downtown Hakodate. There are also two tram lines running throughout Hakodate, and taxis are almost always available as well.
2
There’s not a lot of shopping near the port, so you’re better off heading out to get lunch or fresh local seafood from Morning Market. JR Hakodate Station and its neighboring shops are a short bus ride away.
3
Tipping isn’t a must while you’re on your cruise to Hakodate, Japan. If anything, tipping your waiter or taxi driver could be misinterpreted as impolite, so it’s best not to tip. If you feel you’ve had an exceptional tour guide, you can ask them if they feel comfortable receiving a tip. Use cash when you can. The official currency is called the yen, and many smaller, local establishments won’t take credit cards.
