The Republic of Tunisia is an Arab Maghreb country located in Northern Africa. Tunisia is bordered by Algeria to the west, Libya to the southeast, the Mediterranean Sea to the north, and the Sahara Desert (bigger than the total area of Australia and almost as large as the continental United States) to the south. Home of the ancient city of Carthage, Tunisia was once an important player in the Mediterranean, thanks to its location in the center of North Africa, close to vital shipping routes. The Romans, Arabs, Ottoman Turks and French realized its strategic significance, making it a hub for control over the region.
