The island of Malta is a southern European country in the Mediterranean Sea. It lies 30 miles south of Sicily, 175 miles east of Tunisia and 200 miles north of Libya. The capital of Malta is Valletta, the smallest capital in the European Union and one of the smallest in the world. Malta is a favored tourist destination with its warm climate, numerous recreational areas, and architectural and historical monuments, including nine UNESCO World Heritage sites.
