The pink color of this beach was said to be derived from fractions of coral reefs which mixed with white sand from the beach. This island features a 12,000 foot high volcano (2nd highest in its country) and is home to 3.2 million residents. The main religion of this island is Islam, however Hinduism and Christianity are also represented. Little is known about this island before the 17th century. Before this time it was made up of numerous competing and feuding petty states, each of which were presided over by a prince. During World War II the Japanese invaded, overtook the Dutch defenders, and occupied this island.
