HIKE TORREY PINES IN SOCAL…THEN CINQUE TERRE IN ITALY
SEPTEMBER 13, 2014
Do It Here, Then Do It There…
If you’re looking for a hike with incredible ocean views in Southern California, head to Torrey Pines. Overseas, you’ll find ocean-facing, cliffside trail magic in Italy’s Cinque Terre.
SoCal Hiking at Torrey Pines
Let’s start close to home with Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. While it’s an easy spot to get to for San Diegans, Torrey Pines is also an easy day trip for Southern Californians who live in Orange County or Los Angeles. Torrey Pines is located in the small city of Del Mar, just north or La Jolla. Parking is available for a small fee at the top of the hill Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is located on next to the park’s museum, though entrance to the trails and the museum is free.
Torrey Pines has five main walking trails, each of varying difficulty. Guy Fleming Trail is an easy loop trail with stunning views of the Pacific for half the loop and you’ll hike through rare Torrey Pine trees for the other half. Razor Point Trail provides views of the ocean the entire time and has a steeper incline. The aptly named Beach Trail will take you all the way down to the beach, though be warned it’s a steep climb back to the top.
Whichever Torrey Pines trail you choose, you’ll be rewarded with gorgeous views of the SoCal coastline.
Hiking in Cinque Terre
Cinque Terre, on the other hand, consists of one long trail, but it feels like four different trails as it connects five tiny villages that perch on rugged coastline next to the sea. Cinque Terre is located about 60 miles north of Pisa and the five towns are (in order of south to north) Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso al Mare. Each village has its own unique look and charm and hikers often start in Riomaggiore and hike to Monterosso al Mare, which takes up a good portion of the day. There is also a train connecting the towns if you’re short on time and only want to hike half of the trail.
You can leave the SoCal hiking trails behind and spend a day in Cinque Terre during a Celebrity Cruises Mediterranean cruise that stops in the port of Genoa, located about a 90-minute drive north of Cinque Terre.
