Feast on succulent shrimp, avocado, and chipotle crema set on a fried tortilla

Chef Bernstein, a James Beard Award winner for Best Chef South is a Miami native of Jewish and Latin descent. She is the author of Cuisine a Latina, a best-selling compilation of Latin-inspired recipes. She has dazzled diners and critics alike with her sublime cuisine at her acclaimed restaurant, Michy’s.

Her style of cooking is inspired by her own Latin-influenced food memories and the simple, soulful cooking of her travels. ”You don’t need heavy-handed technique and over-the-top presentation to make a dish work. It’s about amazing ingredients, layered flavors, and simplicity,” says Bernstein.

Plump, fresh shrimp are sautéed with olive oil and garlic and kicked up with serrano chilies. The sautéed shrimp are tossed with fresh grape tomatoes, julienned red onion, cilantro, and fresh lime juice. These bright, fresh flavors perfectly illustrate Bernstein’s theory of fresh ingredients, layered flavors, and simplicity.

When the shrimp and tomato mixture is spooned onto crisply fried corn tortillas and topped with both avocado slices and a creamy avocado puree, then garnished with a smoky chipotle crema, the result is indeed a joyful combination of sunny and sublime.
