A Vacation Guide for Short Cruises: Where to Go and What to Expect

Cruise vacations don’t always mean needing to use up all your precious vacation time. If you need to save some of that time for the holidays or visiting family, or if you don’t have enough vacation time accrued yet for a one- or two-week vacation, you can still have a relaxing getaway during which you can truly unwind and recharge even if it’s for a short time. This is possible thanks to weekend cruises, which you can take advantage of in several destinations around the world.

Here are some of the top short cruises you can take and things to do during your getaway vacation.

Short Cruises to the Bahamas

A quick three-day cruise to the Bahamas is the quintessential short cruise vacation. The Bahamas are located less than 200 miles due east of the southern coast of Florida, making it an easy journey for cruise ships to make from the Florida embarkation ports of Miami and Fort Lauderdale.

When you sail to the Bahamas, your cruise ship will dock in Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas. Nassau is full of fun activities you can do during your day in port, with an emphasis on water ones.

A popular shore excursion is to go to Atlantis Resort, which has a massive water park. Cruisers can get day passes to the water park and have fun zipping down the water slides, riding the rapids of the river ride, and lounging in one of the many pools on its premises.

Snorkeling and scuba diving are also fun shore excursions to do in the Bahamas thanks to an abundance of sea animals and coral reefs.

When you’re not in the water you can walk around Nassau and gaze at the candy-colored buildings, which house a variety of shops in which you can browse.

Western Caribbean Short Cruises

The eastern Caribbean wonder of the Bahamas isn’t the only quick jaunt from Florida. There are also short cruises to the Western Caribbean that depart from either Miami or Fort Lauderdale and visit the ports of Cozumel, Mexico, and Key West, Florida (sometimes both and sometimes just Cozumel depending on the itinerary and number of nights you’re sailing).

Cozumel is a Mexican island located off the coast of Mexico a short distance from Cancun. It is famous for its scuba diving, which boasts coral reef walls and the chance to see sharks, sea turtles, a myriad of fish, and even whale sharks during certain times of year.

Even if you’re not scuba certified, you can still have underwater adventures in Cozumel thanks to Snuba, which is a combination of snorkeling and scuba diving. With Snuba your oxygen tank stays on a flotation raft above you and you’re connected to if via a long tube that lets you explore under the water up to 20 feet.

In Key West, explore the southern most point of the continental United States. Key West has an energetic downtown area with beach bars and historic buildings. You can also take an excursion to the Key West National Wildlife Refuge, which you can kayak around and also provides many opportunities to see birds and other wildlife.

Southern Caribbean Short Cruises from Puerto Rico

If you don’t mind a puddle jumper flight to Puerto Rico from the U.S. mainland, a southern Caribbean sailing from San Juan, Puerto Rico, is a memorable short cruise.

When vacationing with Celebrity Cruises, the southern Caribbean short cruises from San Juan visit Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, in the lushly gorgeous U.S. Virgin Islands; Basseterre, the vibrant capital of St. Kitts and Nevis; and St. John’s in exotic Antigua – all in four nights!

In St. Thomas, head to one of St. Thomas’ beautiful sandy beaches, like the crescent-shaped Magens Bay. Then go duty-free shopping for great deals on jewelry back in Charlotte Amalie before you get back on the ship.

In Basseterre, take a shore excursion tour around the island that visits the downtown area of Basseterre where you’ll learn about the history of St. Kitts and Nevis and see pretty sights like Independence Square. You’ll also have the opportunity to get out of town to see the natural beauty of St. Kitts and Nevis and take in panoramic vistas from scenic viewpoints.

While in St. John’s, Antigua, grab your bathing suit and beach towel and head to one of the island’s blissfully relaxing beaches. Many of the beaches have lounge chairs you can rent for the day for added comfort. Those looking for some local culture and history can visit one of the farmer’s markets in town or take a tour to the old ruins of a former sugar plantation.

Short Cruises in the Mediterranean

You may typically think you need to take off more than a week to enjoy a European cruise vacation, especially since you generally lose a travel day in flight time from the U.S. to Europe. However, there are shorter cruises in the Mediterranean that are only six nights long, meaning you have time for a flight and night stay on both ends of your cruise and only have to take a week off work.

This itinerary is one such short cruise vacation in the Mediterranean. During its 6-night voyage, you’ll sail roundtrip from Civitavecchia, the gateway port to Rome, and visit the port of La Spezia from which you can visit Florence or Pisa, Italy; see the gorgeous beaches and promenade of Nice, France; dock in Ajaccio, Corsica, and see the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte; and visit the Italian island port of Cagliari, Sardinia.

While on board, you’ll get to enjoy the luxurious amenities of Celebrity Reflection, including an array of gourmet specialty dining, a full-service spa, and nightly live entertainment.

Shorter Galapagos Cruise Itineraries

The Galapagos Islands are another destination that it seems like you may need a surplus of vacation time in which to visit. However, this is not always the case. Celebrity Cruises has a small fleet of ships that sail the waters of the Galapagos with a small passenger number. Most of the Celebrity Cruises ships in the Galapagos travel with less than 100 people, providing an intimate experience on board. Because Celebrity Cruises has a designated fleet sailing this region, they are able to offer a variety of cruise itineraries in the Galapagos, including ones that are just seven nights.
