Begin your visit to Belém District famous for its landmark tower on the bank of the Tagus River, from where explorers embarked on their voyages of discovery. Visit the Jeronimos Church, a 16th century architectural masterpiece designed in Gothic Manueline style. Tour continues past statue of Pombal , Avenida de Liberdade to Rossio, the heart of Lisbon's downtown. Next visit Alfama, the oldest part of Lisbon, for a quick walk through its cobbled labyrinth of narrow twisting alleys honeycombed with steps and archways. Tour designed to allow visit of Fatima village on your own schedule. On May 13, 1917, 3 shepherds were tending their sheep at Cova da Iria & the Virgin appeared before them in an oak tree, spoke Her message, which was repeated at each appearance on 13th day of each subsequent six months. You have approx 2 hrs at leisure to pray, reflect & explore shrine on your own. Note: Walking is at guests' discretion over even surfaces. Dress code is enforced in basilica. On tour you will pass by principal gardens of Lisbon. Proceed along river front towards Belém area to see Monument to the Discoveries. Continue to Belém Tower. Travel past Jeronimos Monastery Church. Before returning to ship, admire Ponte Salazar. Lisbon's suspension bridge was renamed to commemorate the revolution of April 25, 1974, which restored democracy to Portugal. Nearby on the south bank of the Tagus River is the impressive statute of Christ the King looking over the city. Note: must walk approx 100 yards over even surfaces with steps to enter/exit the coach. Travel by coach to Baixa to begin walk to center of Lisbon. Walk will take you from Praca da Figueira to Elevador da Gloria or Santa Justa Lift. Funicular is connection between Praca dos Restauradores & Bairro Alto or High Quarter. Ride spans 265 m & takes approx 5 mins, taking you to Sao Pedro de Alcantara Belvedere. Afterwards, enjoy glass of Port wine at solar do Vinho do Porto (interior vist) located next door to the Belveder. Short walk takes you to Sao Roque Church for interior visit. Enjoy drive thru countryside leading to medieval town of Obidos. You will feel as if you are travelling back in time as you explore the picturesque streets. Visit 17th century Parish Church of Santa Maria. From Pillory Square, continue exploring narrow lanes at your leisure. There are fine shops to browse, or you may want to hike up to the castle (now a hotel), or explore the old lookout path on top of the wall encircling the city. This is truly an off the beaten path experience. Note: Must walk about 0.5 mile over uneven and cobblestone surfaces with steps. Guests have about 45 mins for self exploration. Not recommended for walkers or wheelchairs.
Tour takes you to Village of Sintra and resort town of Cascais. Pass by Belém Tower as you leave Lisbon. En route to Sintra, travel thru countryside. Stopping in Sintra, you'll see outside of Royal Palace. There will be short stop in the Town Square to shop. In village of Cascais, you'll have time to stroll through its plaza and enjoy its colorful setting and shopping opportunities. After leaving Cascais, your coach will head for the coast and drive along the shores that make up the famous resort areas of the Portuguese Riviera. Note: must walk approx 0.5 mile over cobblestone surfaces with 20 to 35 steps. Tour order may vary but all listed sights will be covered.
