Using solo kayaks you will explore the farther bays and estuaries of Port Frederick with ample opportunities to view wildlife, including sea lions and humpback whales in the water, Sitka black-tailed deer and Brown bear on land, and eagles overhead. This tour includes approximately 3 hours in the kayak with mostly active paddling with some breaks for rest and sightseeing. Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed.
The protected waters of Port Frederick are yours to explore as you set off from the beach at Icy Strait Point in your two-person wilderness kayak for an approximate 1.75 hour guided paddle. Led by a safety-certified, local guide, you will paddle along the Hoonah waterfront en route to quieter waters where bald eagles are often seen and few humans can usually follow.
Icy Strait Point is a prime destination for freshwater stream fishing. After traveling through the town of Hoonah & 10 miles out of town along scenic dirt roads to Game Creek you will be provided with expert instruction, hip boots & all the gear needed to spin cast (or fly fish for those with experience) along the pristine banks of Game Creek. Keep in mind that fish are seasonal & that this is a catch & release program. Steelhead are available in May & early June; Pink salmon run from late June through September; Silver salmon from late August through September. Wear warm clothes & bring $20 cash for the required fishing license.
