Bilbao, Spain

Day 7: Bilbao, Spain

Uncovering authentic local finds and having experiences that make you feel like you’ve really connected with a place are important elements in ensuring an extraordinary vacation. We’re taking advantage of our partnership with Travel + Leisure to get their editors’ recommendations and insider tips on the places you will want to visit. Here are their picks for just one of the 150 destinations they covered.

Must-Sees from the Editors of
Travel + Leisure

Casco Viejo
The city's charming old quarter is anchored by Las Siete Calles-its original seven streets, dating back to the 1400's. Shops and tapas bars line the brick- and stone-paved roads; on Sundays, a market sells antiques, postcards, and records in the 19th-century Plaza Nueva.

Catedral de Santiago
Named for St. James the Great, the 14th-century Gothic cathedral is on what was once a stopping point for pilgrims on the northern route of Spain's Camino de Santiago. Among other unusual architectural features, take note of the Renaissance portico-added after a fire in 1571-and, along the main vault, stone carvings of local merchants.

Guggenheim Museum Bilbao
The Frank Gehry-designed, titanium-clad phenomenon transformed the way the world understands architecture and art museums. The shiny, undulating museum may not seem as shocking as it once did, but its organic curves embody a late-20th-century grandeur.

Be sure to visit our Shore Excursions page or speak with our onboard Destination Concierge for arrangements to any of these must-sees.

Must-Sees from the Editors of

Cíes Islands
If you’re a fan of scenic green mountains and unspoiled white beaches, the hour-long ferry trip to this nature reserve off the coast of Vigo is worth the detour. Bird-watchers should keep an eye out for the yellow-footed gulls that nest here.

Castro Park
There are various scenic lookouts along the winding hiking and biking trails of this center-city green space. For the best views of Vigo and the Cíes Islands, head to the hilltop remains of a 17th-century fort.

MARCO
This art institution opened in a former jail and courthouse in 2002, making it one of Galicia’s youngest and most innovative museums. MARCO specializes in interactive exhibits of contemporary art in a variety of mediums ranging from painting and architecture to music and video.

Must-Sees from the Editors of
Travel + Leisure

São Bento Station
This train station’s exterior brings to mind 19th-century Parisian architecture; its mansard roof and stone façade are particularly appealing. The walls are covered with a mosaic of 20,000 tin-glazed ceramic tiles that took 11 years for artist Jorge Colaço to complete.

Cais da Ribeira
Café tables spill out onto a wide pedestrian promenade at this lively waterfront pier, which is also home to many seafood restaurants. Don Tonho is a restaurant housed in a 16th-century residence with vaulted ceilings and a secret passageway that dates from the time of the Inquisition. Dishes such as tripe and codfish gratin are as traditional as the setting.

Serralves Contemporary Art Museum
Pritzker Prize–winning Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza designed this art museum, which resides on the same grounds as the Serralves Villa—an Art Deco masterpiece that’s open to visitors. Contemporary collections by Portuguese and global artists change every three months.
