Oslo Opera House
With its sloping white-marble roof and delicate glass façade, Oslo’s landmark opera house—designed by world-renowned firm Snøhetta—is a grand architectural statement. The stone terraces run from the shore to the building and are integrated into the roof, a series of steep, angled planes for adventurous pedestrians and pre-theater crowds.
Munch Museum
The glass-and-steel structure is dedicated to the life and works of Norwegian artist Edvard Munch, best known for The Scream. This notable work and Munch’s Madonna were stolen from the property in 2004 and recovered two years later; the prolific collection also includes more than 1,200 paintings and 18,000 prints.
Shoe Lounge
In the edgy, boutique-lined Grünerløkka neighborhood, this footwear mecca is a top shopping destination—and not just for shoes. Brands include Copenhagen’s Beck Sönder Gaard, known for its printed scarves and distressed leather bags, and the city’s own Line of Oslo, maker of organic-linen basics.

Mount Aksla Viewpoint
Get some exercise by climbing the 418 steps to this lookout, or simply take a city sightseeing train from Queen Sonja Square in downtown Alesund. Either way, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of Alesund’s town center, the Sunnmøre Alps, and the Saga Islands just off the coast.
Sunnmøre Museum
This huge open-air museum has a host of stellar exhibits to choose from. You can stroll around 55 historic houses—some from the late Middle Ages—and visit the medieval exhibition that centers on Borgundveien, a partially excavated trading post that thrived from the 11th through the 16th centuries. A boat hall also displays around 40 vessels, including impressive replicas of Viking ships.
Jugend Style Center
This pair of museums, collectively called jugendstilsenteret in Norwegian, includes the Art Nouveau Center, a beautifully restored pharmacy in central Alesund that has three gallery floors dedicated to Art Nouveau works, for which the city is famous. Norwegian Fjord Center
The Norwegian Fjord Center educates travelers about the Geirangerfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its jaw-dropping scenery. At the headlands of the narrow inlet, check out multimedia exhibits such as an avalanche simulation and a dazzling film about Geirangerfjord as it moves through the seasons. A small art gallery is dedicated to works by Norwegian artists.
Herdalseter Mountain Farm
On this excursion, travelers make their way up the north side of Geirangerfjord to a viewpoint overlooking Norway’s famous De Syv Søstre (the Seven Sisters) waterfall. Next: a hike to Herdalsetra, the largest of the summer mountain farms common in the area. While the property has sheep, cows, and Norwegian ponies, most of it is reserved for its 300-plus goats. Ask the farmers for a taste of their rich goat cheese—the samples are usually quite generous.
Fascinating Geiranger
On this two-hour tour, you’ll pass the town’s distinctive octagonal church (Geiranger’s unofficial landmark) and a number of traditional mountain farms on your way to the summit of Mount Dalsnibba. At an altitude of 4,800 feet, this observation point affords incredible views of mountains, waterfalls, and glassy lakes, all of which serve to remind visitors why Norway is so famous for its scenery.
