Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii

Day 7: Honolulu (Oahu), Hawaii

Uncovering authentic local finds and having experiences that make you feel like you’ve really connected with a place are important elements in ensuring an extraordinary vacation. We’re taking advantage of our partnership with Travel + Leisure to get their editors’ recommendations and insider tips on the places you will want to visit. Here are their picks for just one of the 150 destinations they covered.

Must-Sees from the Editors of
Travel + Leisure

Iolani Palace, Historic Honolulu
A National Historical Landmark, Iolani Palace is the official residence of Hawaii’s monarchy. Built by King Kalakaua in 1882, the Italianate building’s most impressive rooms are the Grand Hall, with its Hawaiian wood staircase and portraits of the royals; the red and gold Throne Room; and the private bedrooms. Palace tours are offered every 15 minutes.

Waikiki Beach
Framed by Diamond Head, one of the world’s most-climbed extinct volcanoes, the iconic beach’s two miles of white sand is almost always brimming with tourists and surfers. That’s because the bathtub-temperature turquoise water is ideal for swimming, and the waves are usually gentle. If you’ve ever imagined what Hawaii looks like at its postcard-perfect best, this is it.

Kapiolani Park
Named for Queen Kapiolani, the wife of King Kalakaua, this 155-acre park on the east end of Waikiki was established in 1876. It claims within its boundaries the Honolulu Zoo, the volcanic crater of Diamond Head, and dozens of picnic sites, as well as a mile-long course that zigzags among century-old trees. The park’s Waikiki Shell hosts a variety of musical performances, and on Sundays, you can catch a free concert by the Royal Hawaiian Band at the Kapiolani Bandstand.

Kailua Kona, Hawaii

Day 8: Kailua Kona, Hawaii

This was once the seat of power from which the great King Kamehameha ruled his island empire. Located on the picturesque Kona Coast, where some of the world's best coffee is harvested, Kailua-Kona is close to the marine sanctuary of Kealakekua Bay. This snorkeling haven is also home to the Captain Cook Monument.

Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii

Day 9: Lahaina (Maui), Hawaii

The most prominent feature of Maui is Haleakala, the world's largest dormant volcano. And from the historic town of Lahaina, you might also witness one of nature's greatest spectacles: the annual migration of humpback whales returning to their winter feeding grounds, which takes place between December and March.

Travel + Leisure

Imiloa Astronomy Center
Learn about nalani—which means “under the heavens” in Hawaiian—at this center where science, astronomy, and culture converge. The planetarium has a show, called “Maunakea: Between Earth and Sky,” that explores the creation of the Hawaiian islands, plus Hawaiian language classes and exhibits on Polynesian navigation.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
This 520-square-mile national park is located 45 minutes south of Hilo. Among other natural wonders, the rim of the ruggedly beautiful Halema'uma'u Crater is scattered with offerings to Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes, that visitors have brought: leis, rocks wrapped in ti leaves, and bottles of gin. Make your way down Chain of Craters Road, the park’s path to the ocean, to witness lava that has flowed into the sea since 1986.

HanaHou
Located in downtown Hilo, this stylish shop is the place for finds from Hawaii to Tahiti. The boutique stocks handcrafted art and accessories—woven purses; place mats; papale lauhala (hats)—plus black pearls, Ni'ihau shell jewelry, and vintage etched glassware with Tahitian designs. If you want to do it yourself, you can buy the raw materials for weaving.
