Uncovering authentic local finds and having experiences that make you feel like you’ve really connected with a place are important elements in ensuring an extraordinary vacation. We’re taking advantage of our partnership with Travel + Leisure to get their editors’ recommendations and insider tips on the places you will want to visit. Here are their picks for just one of the 150 destinations they covered.
You'll find a little bit of everything in this impressive museum, which promotes cultural awareness of the Fijian people. Whale-tooth jewelry, ancient instruments, and wooden weapons—some of which are 3,700 years old—fill the exhibit spaces that surround a waqa tabus, or double-hulled canoe. The Thurston botanic gardens are just outside.
Get a sense of how the upper crust lives in Fiji as you drive past the gorgeous homes strung along Edinburgh Drive—each taking advantage of the views of Suva Harbor and Lathala Bay. At the top, you’ll head to Rewa Village, where locals greet everyone with garlands before escorting them to the town center. Travelers are encouraged to take part in artisan demonstrations—weaving and coconut husking, among others—and to watch a traditional presentation of kava, Fiji’s ceremonial drink.
The focus of this six-hour-long journey is Fiji’s tropical landscape, of which there is plenty on the island. After an open-air bus ride to the former sugar plantation region of Navua, you'll jump into a motorized longboat for a few hours of rain-forest exploration. There you'll encounter gorges, waterfalls, and winding rivers, as well as a sapphire-blue watering hole where you can go for a swim. End the day with a meal and a kava ceremony in a Fijian village.
