Golden Gate Bridge
See this world-famous sight the way few visitors think to see it: from below. Start at the Marina end of Crissy Field, an airfield turned recreation area and wildlife refuge in the Presidio. Keep walking west, past the fishing pier (take a moment to look for seals in the water), to Fort Point, the brick Civil War–era fortress guarding the mouth of the Golden Gate. Now look up.

Must-Sees from the Editors of Travel + Leisure

California Academy of Sciences

In San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, this museum embodies green architecture in unprecedented ways. Its innovative plan combines energy-efficient technology- a "living roof" of native plants provides the sleek building with natural insulation and prevents 3 million gallons of rainwater runoff annually-with state-of-the-art exhibitions. The world's biggest all-digital planetarium, for example, employs real-time data from NASA to show spectators cosmic events as they take place.

Exploratorium

Now relocating to a more desirable downtown address and a new $300 million campus, this laboratory and learning center features more than 1,000 interactive science and art exhibits on topics ranging from food science and optical illusions to the human body and space. In one room, for example, you can learn how to make sparkling wine; in another, follow NASA’s space rover Curiosity as it travels around Mars.

Ferry Building

The waterfront complex, originally built in 1898 and reopened in 2003, houses more than 40 gourmet shops, restaurants, and cafés. Make a morning of it and meander from end to end, feasting on everything from chocolate sablées at Miette Patisserie and fresh-baked sourdough from Acme Bread to Mt. Tam triple-cream cheese at Cowgirl Creamery and the Oaxacan chicken tamales at Mijita.
