Montevideo, Uruguay
Uncovering authentic local finds and having experiences that make you feel like you’ve really connected with a place are important elements in ensuring an extraordinary vacation. We’re taking advantage of our partnership with Travel + Leisure to get their editors’ recommendations and insider tips on the places you will want to visit. Here are their picks for just one of the 150 destinations they covered.
Pocitos Beach
Some of the best people-watching in Montevideo is on Pocitos, a popular beach with a busy boardwalk. Locals play volleyball and soccer along the white-sand coastline, which is lined with high-rises that are home to some of the city’s most affluent residents.
Plaza Independencia
The Artigas Mausoleum, a monument and tomb dedicated to the founding father of Uruguay, General José Artigas, anchors this plaza in downtown Montevideo. The square is surrounded by culturally important and architecturally distinctive buildings: like the Estévez Palace, where the president works, and the Solís Theater, built in 1856.
Salvo Palace
This neo-Gothic 1928 tower designed by Italian architect Mario Palanti stands 328 feet tall. It houses a mixture of private office buildings and residences, but travelers can venture to the top for aerial views of Plaza Independencia and the city.
