Punta Moreno, Fernandina

Punta Moreno will almost give you the feeling of time travel into a prehistoric era. Located on the extreme north coast of Isabela Island, between volcanoes Sierra Negra and Cerro Azul, Punta Moreno is dominated by jet-black pahoehoe lava that seems to extend as far as the eye can see. This has created numerous tidal pools, some surrounded by mangroves, that are a magnet for wildlife, including flamingo, great blue herons, moorhens and pintails. You can walk to the edge of the lava to look straight down at the inhabitants of the crystal clear pools, including the occasional green sea turtle, white-tipped reef sharks, and pufferfish. You may also have a chance to see huge marine iguanas, Galapagos Penguins and the rare flightless cormorant.
