Must-Sees from the Editors of Travel + Leisure

San Carlos Garden

There’s more to this historic garden than shady elms and blooming flowers. History buffs will appreciate the monument honoring and tomb of Scottish general Sir John Moore, who died in 1809 defending the British against Napoleon’s forces. There’s also a memorial tablet dedicated to 172 British officers and men who met their fate aboard the Serpent, a warship that sank off Cape Villano, down the coast.

Church of Santa Maria del Campo

Completed in 1302, this Romanesque church in the old city has a beautifully carved door and a diminutive bell tower. Step inside to see its intricate rose window, as well as a collection of religious artworks from the 12th to 15th centuries.

Museum of Archaeology and History

This museum is set inside the 16th-century San Antón Castle—which occupies its own island linked to the mainland by a causeway. In the archaeology section, look out for well-preserved regional Cícere metalwork and a gold-finished Leiro helmet; other exhibition spaces are dedicated to city history and medieval sculpture.
