Uncovering authentic local finds and having experiences that make you feel like you’ve really connected with a place are important elements in ensuring an extraordinary vacation. We’re taking advantage of our partnership with Travel + Leisure to get their editors’ recommendations and insider tips on the places you will want to visit. Here are their picks for just one of the 150 destinations they covered.
Cathedral of Sveti Tripun (Saint Tryphon)
This twin-towered Romanesque beauty was consecrated in 1166 A.D. and soars above the orange rooftops of seaside Kotor. While the church has been struck by several earthquakes, many of its interior features have been restored; saints are depicted in gold- and silver-leaf reliefs and Saint Tryphon is carved in stone above the altar.
Kotor Maritime Museum
This museum pays homage to Kotor’s navy, which had its hands in every industry in the city and country, from commerce and agriculture to defense and exploration. In the 18th century, for example, the city sent 400 ships from its port to explore the world. Pick up an audio guide for an in-depth tour of the exhibits.
Travelers can climb a pathway to the hilltop fortress of Sveti Ivan (Saint John), an almost three-mile-long wall some 919 feet above sea level. The walk up is not for everyone—parts of the trail are rocky and in need of repair—but seeing the ancient city from above is an enticing reason to make the trip.
Be sure to visit our Shore Excursions page or speak with our onboard Destination Concierge for arrangements to any of these must-sees.
