Must-Sees from the Editors of Travel + Leisure

Swan River

Perth's main water artery runs more than 37 miles from the central Swan Valley to the city’s Fremantle neighborhood—right on the Indian Ocean. Travelers can jog or bike on waterfront trails, or take public water taxis and ferries to different points along the river. Bird-watchers should keep an eye out for black swans, rainbow lorikeets, and red-tailed black cockatoos, all common in the area.

Western Australia Museum and Old Perth Gaol

A series of heritage-listed buildings—including the Old Gaol, Perth’s colonial prison, and Hackett Hall, once the state library—host exhibits on Western Australia’s social and natural history. The collection of 4.6 million objects includes archaeological artifacts of the Katta Djinoong, the first peoples of Western Australia, and items from maritime shipwrecks up and down Australia’s west coast.

Kings Park & Botanic Garden

Ponds, fountains, and plants and trees native to Western Australia dot this thousand-acre waterfront park, originally carved from the landscape in 1829, when Perth was the Swan River penal colony. Jump on a free tour with a Kings Park guide, who might point out historic memorials, carnivorous plants, and at least a few of the area’s 80 bird species.
