Fire & Water by Celebrity Cruises

You might be off-roading through Sicily’s rugged landscape, but this eight-hour tour is more than an adrenaline-filled adventure. Amateur geologists will love visiting volcanic eruption sites, some created as recently as 2001, where volcanoes still send up heat and plumes of smoke and caves have been created by lava. Wrap up a vigorous hike with a Sicilian lunch paired with island wines at Kikaion, an agriturismo.

La Pescheria

Sicily is known for its fresh fish, much of which is sold at morning seafood markets like this one. La Pescheria is especially lively and colorful thanks to its central location—it’s close to the Duomo—and popularity among locals. Red umbrellas cover dozens of stalls where chefs and residents haggle

Piazza Duomo

This central square in downtown Catania is anchored by the Fontana dell’Elefante, or the Fountain of the Elephant (the gray mammal that bears the white obelisk was carved from lava). St. Agatha Cathedral, originally built in the year 1078 on top of the ruins of a Roman bath, stands at the piazza’s east end. It has suffered through a series of earthquakes, leaving it architecturally diverse: the “new” Baroque façade was built in the late 1600’s; the walls of the transept and apse date back to the 11th century.
