Traditional Corfu dishes such as sofrito, or veal cooked in white wine, and bakaliaropitta, a pastry filled with codfish, herbs, and rice, make up the menu at Nikolas Taverna, a family-owned restaurant in a century-old house on the east coast of Corfu. (They also make their own wine; ask for the house red or white.) If you happen to be in town on a Thursday, don’t miss Greek night, when music, dancing, and shared platters add to the appeal.

Must-Sees from the Editors of Travel + Leisure

Greek hero Achilles is the central theme of this hilltop mansion, built in 1890 by Empress Elizabeth of Austria. She hired famed German sculptor Ernst Herter to chisel figures from Greek mythology; his most famous work, Dying Achilles, can be viewed in the house’s adjacent gardens. While the grounds were pillaged and fell to ruin during World Wars I and II, the estate was eventually restored—you might recognize the casino as the backdrop of the 1981 James Bond classic, For Your Eyes Only.

Hidden Villages of Kerkyra by Celebrity Cruises

Go off-roading through olive groves and cypress forests to Corfu’s rarely visited villages in an open 4WD caravan tour. Among the many highlights on the seven-hour trip is the trek up Pantokrator Mountain—there are 27 turns to the top—starting from Ano Korakiana, one of the oldest and largest Corfu villages. Eager to sit behind the wheel? Don’t worry—everyone gets the chance to drive.

Glyfada Beach

Tree-covered hills frame this crescent moon of golden sands on the secluded western coast of Corfu. Bikini-clad locals sunbathe or swim through placid blue waves; many dive and snorkel from jagged rocks just off the shore. If you get hungry, head to one of the tavernas serving meze and drinks located within walking distance of the water.
