Bartolome Island

One of the most spectacular settings in the Galapagos. As one of the relatively younger islands, its volcanic origins are easy to see and admire. One visiting astronaut even said it reminded him of the moon. Colors swirl in the hardened lava of the numerous spatter cones that are passed as you hike to the top of the volcano, some 380 steps. Along the way spectacular vistas look out over the other islands of the Galapagos and at the top the view is perhaps the most famous in all the Galapagos. Afterwards, you can take a short Zodiac ride to the beach in search of penguins and then there is time to relax, swim or enjoy a great snorkel. Around the famous pinnacle, whitetip sharks, schools of surgeonfish along with parrotfish, hogfish, and the chocolate chip sea star can be seen. On the rocks, orange cup corals brighten up the undersea palette. And if luck holds, a penguin or sea lion may swim by.
