Must-Sees from the Editors of Travel + Leisure

Norwegian Fjord Center

The Norwegian Fjord Center educates travelers about the Geirangerfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its jaw-dropping scenery. At the headlands of the narrow inlet, check out multimedia exhibits such as an avalanche simulation and a dazzling film about Geirangerfjord as it moves through the seasons. A small art gallery is dedicated to works by Norwegian artists.

Herdalseter Mountain Farm

On this excursion, travelers make their way up the north side of Geirangerfjord to a viewpoint overlooking Norway’s famous De Syv Søstre (the Seven Sisters) waterfall. Next: a hike to Herdalsetra, the largest of the summer mountain farms common in the area. While the property has sheep, cows, and Norwegian ponies, most of it is reserved for its 300-plus goats. Ask the farmers for a taste of their rich goat cheese—the samples are usually quite generous.

Fascinating Geiranger

On this two-hour tour, you’ll pass the town’s distinctive octagonal church (Geiranger’s unofficial landmark) and a number of traditional mountain farms on your way to the summit of Mount Dalsnibba. At an altitude of 4,800 feet, this observation point affords incredible views of mountains, waterfalls, and glassy lakes, all of which serve to remind visitors why Norway is so famous for its scenery.
